MD3220 controller problems

Hey Guys,

I have a md3220 with a failed second controller(not primary), there is no data to worry about as it's been retired. I would like to get it into simplex controller mode, I've been unable to connect to it with the MD management software but serial is all good. When I try the set storageArray redundancyMode=simplex I get a message saying set is overloaded with 2 options below it which neither of them work. Do I have 2 dead controllers? All out of warranty now.

Hello Den87,

What you can do is watch the boot of your controller & see if it boots to the Strat of the Day message.  If you see the start of day message, then your controller has booted successfully. You will want to remove the controller 1 from the system.  Here is the command to set the system into simplex mode using SMCLI.

set storageArray redundancyMode=simplex

Your MD3220 will reboot and once it is up it will run on a single controller in slot0.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Sam L,

Here is the last part of the boot process, it doesnt look like its completing.

I have removed the controller 1 and left the working one in slot 0

Hello Den87,

You are correct that your controller is not booting.  One thing that you can try is to pull the raid battery & leave it out for about an hour to see if that will allow the controller to boot.  What is the serial out put of the other controller?

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for your help so far Sam L,

Ive tried the battery removal for about 6 hours on the primary controller and no change.

The second controller doesnt look good either. Should I try the battery pull on the second controller?

Hello Den87,

Looking at this controller it has a data base error.  When you get a data base error on most controller it is best to replace the controller.
