MD3420 as Expansion to Another MD3420

I have two MD3420's that I am re-purposing from another project.  I would like to combine the storage from both and present as a single LUN.  With that said, is it possible to use one of the MD3420's as an expansion enclosure?  I didn't see anything about it grazing through the manual, though I figured it wouldn't hurt to ask. :)

Hello JGillTech,

You can’t connect both MD3420 to each other and have one be an expansion enclosure.  With an MD3xxx systems you can connect an MD12xx, MD14xx, or MD3060e.  The issue is that both MD3420 have controllers in them that want to hold the configuration.  In the expansion enclosures you have EMM that connect to the controllers.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Can I purchase EMMs to effectively turn the MD3420 into an expansion enclosure?

Hello JGillTech,

You can swap the controllers in an MD3420 for EMM’s.  However, there are steps that need to be done in VXshellusr in order to get your MD3420 to be seen as an MD1400.  The steps to change a system is normally done in the factory, so I am not able to provide the commands that are needed to complete the conversion.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

The information related expansion enclosures are not 100% correct. You can't connect MD14xx to any MD3xxx controllers an expansion enclosures. you can connect only MD12xx as 2U alternative which is already EOLed.

All MD3 upgrade paths EOLed. I strongly recommend to migrate ME4xxx storage arrays
