ME4024 - To tier or cache with SSD (with 2 ESXi hosts)?

Does anyone have a (justified) recommendation for disk configuration on an ME4024 consisting of

  • 2 x 1.92TB SSD SAS
  • 12 x 2.4TB HDD SAS 10K

In short, I think my two best options are either:

  1. One ADAPT group with all HDD, and use the SSDs in RAID-1 as a Performance Tier in the same group. This only uses one controller actively though.
  2. Create two RAID-6 with 6 HDD each, and one SSD as read cache for each. Then pin each to seperate controllers, so we have active traffic on both controllers under normal usage. (I'm leaning toward this one to utilize both controllers for more throughput)

The ME4024 is connected with SAS to two R640 ESXi hosts (works perfect since VMFS is cluster aware).

The two hosts will run around 30 VMs between themselves with light load.

Hello Olainen,

If it was me doing your deployment I would go with your second option.  As you stated that if you go with option 1 then you will have limited performance, as all is being done through a single controller.  Here is also a link to Dell EMC PowerVault ME4 Series and VMware vSphere best practices.
