Need Help With Shared Storage - MD3220i

I inherited a job with Vmware setup and a few older physical servers.  I have some experience with VMware.

Currently I have 3 hosts, 2 fairly new and and 1 old host acting as a test host, I just upgraded them to Vmware 5.5  All have local datastores.  I want to use clustering and a shared storage and that is where the MD3220i comes in.  It has 2 nic controllers.  Currently I have a physical storage that is windows 2003 and that is where all the users save their work.  I want to configure the MD3220i as a shared storage for the VMs and also for the users to save their work.

What is the best practice to cable this MD3220i? via switch, (PowerConnect 5524 which I have an extra) or directly to the Hosts or is there another way?  Next how would I setup the storage as a datastore, probably about 2TB for the VMs and another 3TBs for user storage?  I am running windows server 2008 and 2012.

I am new to setting up shared storage of this nature, although I have set up shared storage array in EVO for a few Macs via fiber but that is quite different from this setup.  Thanks and I appreciate all the help and recommendations.

Hello v_user,

Here is a link to our deployment guide, and if you look on page22 it shows the best way to cable the system with your 3 servers & switch. http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/Common/powervault-md3200i_Deployment%20Guide_en-us.pdf

Now once you get your MD3220i cabled base deployment done then you will use MDSM (Modular Disk Storage Manager) to manage the MD3220i. You find MDSM which is on the Resource CD. Here is a link to the resource cd just in case you need it. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=JPKXM

So when you get MDSM installed and are going to setup your Disk groups that is where you will define that you will have a cluster for the virtual disk that you will create of 2TB & 3TB. Here is the link to the user’s guide for MDSM. http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/Common/powervault-md3200_Administrator%20Guide_en-us.pdf
