PowerVault MD3000i Hard Drive Replacement

Greetings .

I have a PowerVault MD3000i with two failed Hard drives, the MODEL number on them is ST31000640SS , Barracuda ES.2 , Firmaware MS04 Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) 1000GB RPM:7200 Config Code 1311,  WWN:5000c5000d60f254

I got the replacement hard drives Seagate Constellation ES.3 MODEL Number ST1000NM0023 , WWN5000C50083794DBC.

As soon as I replaced one of the bad hard drives with the replacement one, the Powervault Hard drive lights started to shut down and I lost total communication , as soon as I removed the replacement Hard drive all the lights came back on and I was able to regain communication.

Question:

a. Do I need a to perform a Firmware Upgrade to the unit to be able to use this type of replacement drive , and if so were can I get the firmware from :  Express Service Code: 2198414557.

b. If this is the wrong Hard Drive replacement , what will be the correct part number for a replacement part ST31000640SS ?

c. What are my other option to use optional Hard Drives ?

Hello mafdell,

The replacement drives that you received do they have a dell part# on them?  If the drives do have a dell part# on them what is the part#.  So with MD3xxx systems all HDD need to have a dell part# on the drives in order for the MD3xxx to use the drive.  If the HDD don’t have a dell part# on them then the drive gets powered down & marked as failed.  Now if it is a HDD with a dell part# then all you would need to do flash the firmware on the drive is to put the drive into any dell server with a PERC card & you can flash the firmware on the drive.  Here are the Dell part# for a 1TB drive: G377T, CP464, 50XV4, U738K, 8CGTN, 2T51W, DP279,

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello mafdell,

Yes if the drives don’t have a dell part# on them they will not work in your MD3000i system.  The Firmware for the drives is put on at the factory of the drive manufacture & we don’t have it flash non dell drives.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi:

I have a similar issue. I have NEW DELL PURCHASED drives part # ST3400755SS. I have installed the new ones and they are still being seen as "failed disk". The only difference in the old and new drives is the stamped on the label firmware is NS25 on the old and 4C03 on the new.

Do I just leave the new drive intact and then upgrade the disk firmware? Do i need to stop any I/O or can this be done on the fly since the drive is not recognized anyway?
