PowerVault MD3800i: another v. disk not on preferred path
Hello:
We have the same error that is descrived in:
https://www.dell.com/community/DELL-EMC-Storage-Forum/DELL-Power-vault-MD3420-Virtual-disk-not-on-preferred-path-error/td-p/5155934
The documentation sais that is a network issue, bat we didn't registered any error on the switch that supports iSCSI comunicatións, so we need more informatión. There any way of get more detailled informatión about this error from the MD3800i management interface ?
Thanks GoyoNo Events found!

Hello Goyo,
What you need to look at in MDSM is how many virtual disks that you have, and how many are assigned to each controller. You want to have it balanced between the controllers. Also, if you know you have some virtual disk that are accessed more than others, & are on the same controller, then you will want to separate them & change the controller that owns the virtual disk to the other controller.
In most cases you will not see any error on your switch. When the VD fails over the alternate controller it is due to one controller having high I/O & the alt controller having lower I/O.
What is the current version of firmware that is on your MD3800i?
Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hello:
I have defined 3 virtual disk, and I found one stable combination of RAID controller assignments (no change between the two controllers), any other combination fails (that is, there are some disk change from one controller to another)
SMcli -n medusa -c 'show allVirtualDisks;'
...
STANDARD VIRTUAL DISKS------------------------------
SUMMARY
Number of standard virtual disks: 3
See other Virtual Disks sub-tabs for premium feature information.
Name Thin Provisioned Status Capacity Accessible by Source
imagenes No Optimal 10.905 TB Host Group geminis Disk Group imagenes
it No Optimal 5,120.003 GB Host Group geminis Disk Group cuentas
lab No Optimal 11.357 TB Host Group geminis Disk Group cuentas
...
Virtual Disk name: imagenes

...
Preferred owner: RAID Controller Module in slot 0
Current owner: RAID Controller Module in slot 0
...
Virtual Disk name: lab

On this stable state, I get the following iSCSI statistics:

Hello Goyo,
Good to hear that that you were able to resolve your issue with your virtual disk changing controllers. Your firmware version is a little old and should be upgraded when you can. Here is the link to the latest firmware just in case you need it. https://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/04/drivers/driversdetails?driverId=NC41W&osCode=W12R2&productCode=powervault-md3800i
Please let us know if you have any other questions.
