Replace fussy Seagate DDS-3 Python drive?
I have the original tape backup unit from 1999 in my Power Edge 2300. Lately I've been getting more major errors on it (although NO hard write errors detected ever and only 1 hard read error). Today wouldn't mount. Last week had a different problem. Generally have to power down server to fix it. Then I clean drive to be on the safe side. Media never seems to be at fault.
1) Is drive beginning to fail? (I do clean it regularly.)
2) What replacement drive is recommended with same SCSI type for AIC-78XX/PCI SCSI. (Having troubling figuring out the type of scsi it is!)
3) I assume I want a DDS-3 backward-compatible drive. What would that limit me to? What can increase speed AND capacity to encourage more full-system backups.

Hi Tim,
The Scsi controller the tape drive is currently connected to is an Adaptec AIC7860. This is an Ultra-Narrow controller. The tape drive you need which will almost double your capacity is the DDS-4. The DDS-4 drive will work on the AIC-7860 controller and will read DDS-3 tapes. It will also write to the DDS-3 tape, however it is advised to use the DDS-4 tapes to obtain full capacity and longevity of the drive.
The PowerEdge 2300 has been out of production for quite some time, but I believe this drive is compatible:
340-8042 PV100T,DDS4,20/40GB,NC,I,Cust
These are the DDS-4 tapes and Cleaning cartridge you will need:
340-1896 TAPE,MGNTC,FMTD,DDS4,1PK,CUST
340-1898 TAPE,MGNTC,FMTD,DDS4,5PK,CUST
