Significant Upgrade Now Available for the MD3000 and MD3000i - Generation 2

Please read carefully.

There is now an upgrade available, called Generation 2, for the MD3000 and MD3000i storage arrays available on support.dell.com that enables >2TB virtual disks and RAID 6 (as well as other features).

Generation 1 encompasses all MD3000 and MD3000i releases to date, these will be noted with RAID Controller Module Firmware version of 06.xx.xx.xx. Generation 2 RAID Controller Module Firmware version is 07.xx.xx.xx.

PLEASE NOTE: The Generation 2 RAID Controller Module upgrade is an OFFLINE OPERATION, as such ALL I/O to the storage array must be STOPPED PRIOR to downloading the update. 

The MD Firmware Cross Generation Upgrade Utility must be used to upgrade the RAID Controller Module Firmware from Generation 1 to Generation 2. The utility is installed along with the latest version of the MD Storage Manager as part of a Management Station install selection.

NOTE: Microsoft Windows 2000 and Redhat Enterprise Linux 3 as a host OS are not supported by the Generation 2 upgrade.

 

Here are the steps to apply the Generation 2 upgrade:

- Read all applicable documentation

- Stop all I/O to the storage array to be upgraded

- Backup all data on the storage array

- Install the Generation 2 Modular Disk Storage Manager Management Station upgrade on the management station

- Install the Generation 2 Modular Disk Storage Manager Host upgrade on all host servers that connect to the storage array

- Using the MD Firmware Cross Generation Upgrade Utility upgrade the storage array to the Generation 2 RAID Controller Module Firmware

sorry, win2003r2sp1 and md3000. cleared and tried to update again - with or without nvram update checkbox and selection, several times. no luck. updated the driver for the sas controler - no luck either.

Hi there,

burned the cd, updated the software, then tried to update the firmware and run into trouble with MD Firmware Cross Generation Upgrade Utility. The software is uploading (up to 100%, trying briefly to activate and fails. After refresh, there is pending update and the same green arrow that it is upgradeable. below is the log

UPDATE:

after reinstalling from scratch, and using the G2 cdrom to install from the very beginning (not upgrade!) all went smoothly. Also, it was 'clean' 2003sp1 install, I did not update the MS server or java.

Glad that you're up and running.

To be clear though, you did a complete reinstall of the OS on the management station followed by the G2 MDSM, is that right?

Interesting,  we had similar results on our MD3000i's that are in-band managed only,  we had to hook up a laptop to the out of band management port to get it to work.     It makes some sense,  but I didn't see anything stating it had to be out of band managed to perform the upgrade.

I tried upgrading our MD3000i this weekend and ran into the same problem as ediww.
I had version 06.70.15.60  and tried upgrading to 07.35.22.60.

No matter what I did I got the error "Activation failed" when I used the Cross Generation Upgrade Util.
Tried reinstalling my management station with diffrent patch levels, also tried in-band or out-of-band management, but nothing of that worked.

Finally  got the firmware activated by using the command line tool, SMcli, using the command SMcli "activate storageArray firmware;"

Although I didnt realize that I should have added the second IP for the management nic on controller 1 and I got the following message:

Error activating the staged firmware on the array in the Activate command at line 1.
Error 1017 - The download activation operation to the RAID controller module in
slot 0 was successful. However, we could not communicate with the RAID controller
module in slot 1 to verify its completion status because a network management
connection to the RAID controller module has not been defined.
Please define a management connection to the RAID controller module in slot 1 using
the Add Storage Array option. Then, refer to the RAID Controller Modules tab
 in the Storage Array Profile to verify that the RAID controller module firmware
 matches. If the firmware versions do not match, retry the operation.
The command at line 1 that caused the error is:
activate storageArray firmware;


However, I checked with "show storageArray profile", and the firmware seems to have been activated on both controllers.

I'm using English windows 2003. I tried using various images we had with diffrent patch levels, R2 sp2, R2 sp1 and original win2k3 with no patches applied.

The only non-English setting I'm using is Swedish regional settings.

Maybe that is the problem here?

The non-English setting does appear to be the problem here, reference the following:

NOTICE: In non-English versions of the MD Firmware Cross Generation Upgrade Utility, it has been observed that the firmware may fail to activate after the download. While pending activation, the RAID Controller Modules will continue to operate at the previous firmware version. To activate the firmware, the following SMcliI command must be used: SMcli [IP of Controller 0] [IP of Controller 1] -c "activate storageArray firmware;" where [IP of Controller 0] and [IP of Controller 1] are replaced with the actual IP addresses of the RAID Controller Modules.

There seems to be an update for this firmware <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>. The fixes and enhancements section shows:

It seems like I had download and extract the entire resource CD with RAR....   to get the latest updates.....

Under Dell.com My Account..      I see them under the drivers once I select that SVC tag under my systems....

What exactly are you looking for?

 

 

Just the FW's?    There is a new storage manager out too,   it provides support for Server 2008 R2....
