powervault 110t dlt, dlt VS80 tape drive is experiencing errors

We are having problems with our tapeware backup program or the drive itself. The drive is a PowerVAult 110T DLT tape drive. It uses a DLTtape IV.

Here are the warnings it is giving me:

ALERT warning 1302: tape alert - warning - hard error server FS1 dev-3.0..0: Dell PV-110T-DLT-VS80 Server-FS1 Full Backup:10

The operation has stopped because an error has occurred while reading or writing data, which the drive cannot correct.

ALERT: Error 1305: TapeAlert - Critical - write

server FS1 dev-3.0..0: Dell PV-110T-DLT-VS80 Server-FS1 Full Backup:10

The tape is from a faulty batch or the tape drive is faulty: 1. use a good tape to test the drive. 2. If the problem persists, call the tape driver supplier.

ALERT: Error 1319: TapeAlert - Critical - Clean now

server FS1 dev-3.0..0: Dell PV-110T-DLT-VS80 Server-FS1 Full Backup:10

The tape drive needs cleaning: 1. If the operation has stopped, eject the tape and clean the drive. 2. If the operation has not stopped, wait for it to finish and then clean the drive. Check the tape drive users manual for devise specific cleaning instructions.

Disaster Recover generation has failed for Host: Server -FS1

It will not complete the backup. It ejects the tape and the clean tape head light flashes on the front of the backup drive.

I have tried different tapes; they all give the same message as I have listed above.

Could this be a software problem, or a hardware problem?

It sounds to me like a H/W problem.

If the unit is an external desktop drive check the cable connection and the terminator for bent pins on the back of the drive.

If it is an internal unit check the cable connected to the tape drive and the SCSI card for bent pins. The internal cable should have the terminator attached to the cable, make sure there is a terminator attached.

Have you ever had a  successful backup with this unit?

Yes, we have had successful backups.  This just started happening about 1 week ago.

We are going to have this tape drive replaced.

Have you tried to clean the drive w/ a cleaning cartridge?

We had to replace the tape drive, it was defective.

We are also going to purchse new tapes as these are almost a year old.
