I have a DELL MD1400 DAS storage and 3 DELL PowerEdge 14 generation server and 1 DELL raid controller H840 along with 2 DELL power switch S4128F-On (10Gb) switch. now I want to connect DAS directly to one of the three servers via the H840 SAS connection. After that, I want to use the storage for each of the three server...can anyone helps me with the detailed procedure??

Hello Niamun,

“The MD1400 and MD1420 disk enclosures support attachment to a single server only. The drives within each enclosure cannot be accessed in a “split mode” between two.” This info is found in the support matrix of MD1400 & 1420. Here is the link to that guide. https://dell.to/2R18Izb

Hi,

I don't want to use the split mode as it is not supported in MD1400. I want to attach the MD1400 to a 14th generation server and use this server as an ISCSI target for the rest of the server so that I can use the space of the MD1400 for the server. I hope I have cleared my query. If you allow me to contact you then I will be obliged.

Hello Niamun,

Are you trying to use Storage spaces?  If you use a perc H840, then only the server that has the perc installed can see the storage.  You will need to use a sas hba like a 12gb sas card to use storage spaces.

Hi,

What if I integrated the storage with the server which consists of H840 then makes it an ISCSI target and uses it as an ISCSI server? Then can I present the storage space to the other servers?

Would you please tell me about the functionality of the SAS 12 Gb card? If I want to use the server as an ISCSI server then will I need to use the SAS card or H840? If I use the SAS 12 GB card then will it use to connect the storage to one server only or many?

Notes: here MD1400 has 4 SAS 12 Gb port each for both EMM and 14th gen server which I want to connect with the storage has H840.

I am a bit confused...If you allow me to contact ..thank you for your reply

Hello Niamun,

You will need to use a non-raid SAS HBA not your H840 PERC.  We have not tested using an MD1400 the way you are wanting to so it is hard to say if it will work. AN MD1400 has only 2 SAS ports for connecting to a host.  The other 2 sas ports are for expansion to add another MD1400 to the first MD1400.

hi,

I have already reviewed these two but there nothing like what I mentioned.

Here I am giving you a link where I kept a design. In this design, MD1200 is used and I am going to use MD1400 and the connection between storage to the server is SAS connectivity. In the storage end, there is a 12 Gb SAS module and in the server end, it is an H840 card.

would you please give it a look and give me your opinion?

Attach the MD1400 to the H840 which is in one of your 3 PowerEdge Servers and create a Storage Server on.

Depends on your needs and whats to run on the other 2 Servers your Storage Server can offer File or Block storage.

  1. Open-E (iSCSI, NFS, CIFS)
  2. FreeNAS/OpenNAS (iSCSI,NFS,CIFS)
  3. Nexenta...
  4. Windows Server (iSCSi, CIFS)
  5. Hypervisor like vSphere ESXi with "local storage" and then create a Storage VM (1-4) on it

There is no need to mess around with "Storage Spaces(Direct)".

Joerg

Yes, I don't want to use the storage space directly. First, I will attach the storage with the server that consists of H840 then make this server an ISCSI target then, from the ISCSI target I will give space to another server as a block..is it sounds good? or do I need any modification?
