What would be the best desktop. T7500 or T3600 or Optiplex 9020

Generally speaking what would be the best desktop for regular work, video editing, web creation etc.

If they had same drives, Win 10 o/s etc

I have the three boxes but would like to know the better (fastest etc) for my main one.

Not sure if you need more info.

Optiplex 9020

Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 CPU @ 3.30GHz    16GB RAM
HD Graphics 4600

T3600

Intel(R) Core(TM) E5-1620 CPU @ 3.60GHz    16GB RAM
Nvidia NVS315

T7500

Intel(R) Xeon (R) X5570 CPU @ 2.93GHz    48GB RAM
Nvidia Quadro FX5800

Thanks

@ozstar

"video editing, web creation etc." needs a REAL GPU aka Quadro RTX 4000

NVIDIA Quadro RTX 4000 B07P6CDHS5

That would mean the Intel(R) Core(TM) E5-1620 CPU @ 3.60GHz would work the best with that GPU because the power supply is bigger.

Intel® Xeon® Processor E5-2680 8 CORE 130W
20M Cache, 2.70 GHz, 8.00 GT/s Intel® QPI

9020 can have optional 365w power supply but its not standard.  9020 also is not supporting ecc ram or more than 32 gigs. T3600 can be updated to 130w 8 core cpu as well.

Many thanks for the help.

I have been using both the 9020 and the T7500 for editing and they have both been fine but as you correctly suggest, not as good as if In had the correct and wizzbang graphics card. A bit out of my post Covid budget I'm afraid.

We have in all three 9020's for different things and they are all great.

I think I should try and replace the T7500 with something more appropriate.

Over the recent years I have been buying ex government etc boxes and although not current, are enough for my needs.

Any suggestion for a 'not so new' box to replace the T7500 ?

Thank you for your time.

Well, mainly I think depends on your budget (and sourcing / timeframe to get one)

Many thank for the reply.

Your T7820 looks like a dream machine but way out of my league or needs.

I try to get something like that but lovingly used.

I've had very good success thus far doing this and hope it continues while I need to sit in front of a screen.

I will continue the search.

Hello ozstar

For what's its worth, if you're talking about the Optiplex 9020 (Small Factor), or Dell Optiplex 5040, I wouldn't necessarily expect a lot of room for expansion. I made the mistake of picking up an Optiplex 7050 Mid Sized Tower (had to return it); was shocked to see how things had shrunk. Since I was looking to build my own machine adding audio & video peripherals, the folks here led me to a bigger enclosure like the Precision 3620. Good Luck.

Here's a stripped down version:

Hi,

Yes the 9020 is too small but I have 3 of them and they have all been very good for what I have been doing including a lot of multi camera video and audio editing etc

It is the 3600 that I wanted to try and get a better Graphics however the new really good one are well over my economic reach.

I started in 1976 on main frames and went through the Commodore, Kaypro, Dos,first PC's, Windows 95 and up. I used to built all my boxes until I decided to try a used Dell, now I'm done with building myself.

I'm 82 but still doing a 10 hour day and still loving it.

Hi Again Ozstar

"the new really good ones are well over my economic reach"

Completely understand and BTW thanx for sharing your age. I'm 73 myself and enjoy working with both PC's and older Mac Desktops, (which I use offline for video and music).

Why don't you try your luck with this ?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/363841984495?hash=item54b6ac17ef:g:JDYAAOSwcsRig71E

if nobody competes , 199usd is not a bad price. (the drawback is that the 2 cpus do not have hyperthreading , so each has 8 cores and that's all. Also the speed is fix at 1.7ghz)
The 2609v4 at 1.7ghz is on par (using all 8 cores) with the i5-4590 at >3ghz (benchmarks), and there are 2 of them installed (nothing prevents from changing them later if finding a good bargain, too)

On my searching around I have come across others who also have a T7500 and want it faster.

Seems like one can up the CPU to a say X5680 or X5690 which will increase it.

For around A$100 this sounds like a good option.

I have 48GB RAM so okay there.

What else is there that can up the speed other than SSD drives?

Am I on the right road?

Hi,

The video editing software I use is Cyberforce Power Director 365 and 15 and Magix Video Pro X 11 and audio is Cubase Pro 11 and Audition. Graphics are Photoshop CS6, Paintshop Pro 2022 and PhotoImpact X3.

As it is,the 7500 does quite well already and I never have any trouble, albeit sometimes a little slow on some rendering, so a little more grunt wouldn't go astray.

If your focus is keeping the t7500, I'm seeing that an X5690 would put it very slightly in front of the i5 4590, so aside an ssd, it would be a matter of a slightly newer gpu, too, maybe ( not actually an obligation because the tasks you mention are using the cpu aside video editing... and that would depend on the software used, I mean if taking advantage of the gpu to help )

In this case a more recent gpu would add to the improvements. The Fx5800 is from 2008, 14 years are a lot in the gpu market (research required to compare findings. by example a quadro 2000, even if newer, would not be an improvement vs the fx5800)
