32-bit? 64-bit?
Does a printer driver have to be written specially for a 64-bit OS?
I have two Dell printers, one of which (the 962) just broke. I have an almost-new (as in, seldom used) 924 AIO that I would like to use as a copier, but Dell seems to stop updating drivers after about 2 years. There's a Vista 32-bit driver, would that work?

Yes, the drivers are different. Each printer has 32-bit and 64-bit drivers. Dell never updates their website to reflect all the 64-bit drivers. I have been helping people here for a few years and located the drivers for the printers.
Since you have Vista/Windows 7 you need to disconnect the printer, download and run the patch(printer cleanup Utility), each printer has one, until it prompts you to restart your computer. Restart your computer. Download and install the proper drivers. You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on). Both printers will work with Windows 7 in the compatibility mode, if needed.

some 32 bit drivers will work fine on 64 bit systems.
