Del XPS 15 9550 & HP Laserjet 400 not being seen as a printer.

Hi

I have a new Dell XPS 15 9550 with Windows 10, and when I plug in my "old" printer (that was working on my previous laptop top) HP Laserjet 400 M451 dn via USB the printer is seen as a USB storage device & not a printer. Have downloaded the the latest drivers from HP and tried to install them, and it gets to the point of seeing the device , but times out when trying to install the drivers.

Is this due to the the fact that the printer is USB 2 and the laptop has

  • 2x USB 3.0, Thunderbolt 3 (also supports USB-C 3.1 Gen 2)

Are these compatible with each other should they work ?

Any ideas as to how to get these to work with each other ?

Cheers

Trevor.

Check your device manager when you plug that printer in. Does the printer show up? If so, and the driver is not installed you should have a bang next to it. If you can extract the printer driver and find the .inf file then you should be able to force the driver using the have disk option.

In the devices and printers screen it adds the printer as a USB storage device in the devices half of the box not in the printers half. Loads a USB storage driver and wont allow me to change the drivers for this.
