Dell 3000CN Changing Paper Type

When I change the paper from the printer driver, the printer times out despite having the correct paper. Do I have to go to the front panel of the printer to change the loaded paper type or can I do it over the network? Does the printer print differently based on the paper setting? If so, I noted smearing of black ink on a glossy laser label. Is the correct setting plain paper, coated paper or label paper.

Thanks for your help.

Yes, one of the really irritating things about the printer is that you have to have the paper setting in the printer driver the same as the paper setting in the printer's memory.  This means that if you change your driver to print on labels, you have to change the MPF in the Tray Settings to Labels also. You can change the printer either from the front panel, or by HTTPing to the printer's IP address (if it is on your network).  I'm not sure how you get to the printer configuration if it is on USB, but it's probably on the CD that came with it.
