Dell 966 Difficulties

I bought this unit used and downloaded drivers from the Dell website.  No problems downloading after providing the Service Tag number.  A few days ago, I wanted to check for updated drivers.  Now the Dell website tells me that the machine was from outside the U.S.  It wasn't from outside the U.S. two months ago.  What happened?

Installation of software was difficult.  I first installed it on a Windows 7 64-bit system, but I kept getting an error message that one of the files with a .exe suffix stopped working.  After getting the test page to print, I couldn't get anything else to print.

So I installed it on my XP machine, and it worked for printing after multiple "no communication" errors, followed by unplugging and replugging, rebooting, etc.  Then I tried scanning.  It scanned one item.  When I tried scanning again, the software has the "Not responding" error.  Closing and restarting gives the same results.

Is there any solution to all this, or is the software simply ill-designed?  I like the machine, but it's of little use if the software doesn't work.

pbjbctox,

On the Windows 7 machine, try running Finding System Information remove your product Id and post the rest of the information back here.

Also tell me which virus protection and firewall you're using.

pbjbctox,

First run Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.

Disconnect the printer.

Download and run the patch(printer cleanup utility) until it prompts you to restart your computer.

Restart your computer. Make sure the printer is removed. Manual Printer Driver Removal

Download the Vista 64-bit drivers. Install the Vista 64-bit drivers in the Vista Compatibility mode If using the wireless adapter, choose network and follow the instructions. If using the USB Cable, install the drivers first. You'll get a message, the printer is not connected. Connect the printer at this time(powered on)

Links to the patch/drivers can be found at...

I hope you're only using one firewall. Using two firewalls conflict with each other.

pbjbctox,

I forgot to mention this. If you have the printer disk...

As for scanning, if you have the disk that came with the printer, then insert the Printer disk and stop it from running. Go to My Computer and double click on it. Look for the drive with the Dell disk in it. Right click on it, left click explore. Look for the OCR Folder. In the OCR Folder, there is an Abbyy Folder. right click on setup.exe, that's in the Abbyy Folder and left click run as administrator. This will install the OCR program.

Or

Try Simple OCR

Tried all that.  Tried installing the printer in XP SP3 compatibility and in Vista SP2 compatibility.  Different responses each time.  Sometimes I get "must enable bi-directional printing," but, when I do that, the bi-directional box does not stay checked after I close the Printer Properties box.  I get a "Device not recognized" error.  Sometimes the driver installs almost completely, but then quits and becomes non-responsive.  Once, I could get the test page printed, but then nothing more.  Once, I got the famous "no communications" error.  Rebooted the computer.  Unplugged the power & USB cable.  Replugged the power and USB cable.  No printing.

This is NOT an easy device to install.

Sorry for the delay in responding, but I was out of town for a week.

Also, the Windows firewall is turned off, so I run one firewall only.

Add to this that, when I finally can get the machine to print, it prints the entire document, but the progress bar shows that it has printed 99% of the document.  The remainder remains in the print queue and I can't delete it or cancel it.  It sits there and blocks all subsequent print jobs.

pbjbctox,

What virus program are you using?

Try running Delete Print Jobs to remove any stuck print jobs in the queue.

Anti-virus:  MS Security Essentials

I run Delete Print Jobs, but it will not remove the job which is 99% complete.  I have to reboot to clear that.

I've tried to enable bi-directional support.  After I click on the box in the Ports section and then close everything out, if I open it again to check bi-directional support, the bi-directional box is cleared.

I'll make you a good deal on a 966.  I'm about ready to try a different brand.

The error described in the link is not the error which I have had.  Since I don't get the "Files lxeacoms.exe and lxeawbgw.exe from printer driver have been blocked" error message, are these the files that I need to include in MSC's excluded files?  I often get the error, "AIOC has stopped working" for no reason which I can understand.  Why does that occur?

pbjbctox,

Your Dell Printer was made for Dell by Lexmark. The errors lxeacoms.exe and lxeawbgw.exe are from the Dell Printer.

So I guess that I give up?  I installed the driver using XP SP2 compatibility and set everything in the \programfiles(x86)\Dell as excluded from Microsoft Security Essentials.  When I install the software, Windows 7 gives me the error message that the device driver was not installed.  When I print the test page, 99% of it prints,  I click on Cancel to cancel the rest of the print job.  When I look at "What's printing" over 5 minutes later, the test page is still there.  I click Cancel again, but it won't remove the job.  And I can't delete the printer with a print job still showing.

I thought that this was a decent machine, but it looks as if it's the last Dell device that I'll ever buy.  I've never had this much difficulty installing ANY printer.

pbjbctox,

You should have installed the Vista 64-bit drivers in the Vista compatibility mode.

There were issues with theses items, maybe you have one of these.

Dell Studio™ 1536 Is Unable to Print Documents (AMD USB Audio Driver Filter) and uninstall NVIDIA's Network Access Manager

It has installed on other Windows 7 machines, unless there is something that your machine is blocking it.

Scan for malware? Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware update it and do a quick scan.

My machine does not have the AMD USB Audio Driver Filter installed, so I cannot delete it.  I run MS Security Essentials, Malwarebytes, and ThreatFire, plus a Comodo firewall.  I've installed the driver in Vista, Vista SP1, Vista SP2, XP SP2, and XP SP3 compatibility modes.  Same problem--test page prints 99%, but I can't clear the print job.  That job blocks any future jobs from printing.

I have an XP machine which I'll try, but I'm certain that this is the last piece of Dell hardware that I'll ever buy.
