Dell A920 scanning problem

I have owned the printer for a few years and its been problem free.  Now when I scan, there is a large rectangular black bar that covers about 20% of the document.  It doesn't appear if I print, only when I place a document on the plate glass.  I cleaned the plate glass (which did not seem dirty) but it didn't fix anything.  Not sure what else to do.
