Fatal Error installing HP PhotoSmart C7200 software in Windows XP

I'm hoping someone can give me some ideas.  I receive a fatal error attempting to install software for my new HP PhotoSmart C7280 Printer on my Windows XP Dell Computer.  The error occurs attempting to write a file (msi.dot4wrp) to the registry.  After hours with HP Tech Support, it was recommended to me that I reformat my computer to allow the software to load.  I'm hoping for a less drastic solution.  If anyone has experienced similar difficulties, or could offer any assistance, I would greatly appreciate it.

I have a solution for you that has a 80% chance of working, if you're up to it. I tried Internet Explorer 7, when it first came out and it disabled my HP PhotoSmart Camera software, Motorola Phone tools and some other programs. I un-installed Internet Explorer 7 and went back to Internet Explorer 6 and everything worked again, coincidence?

Go to start, control panel, add/remove programs, show updates.

Un-install Internet Explorer 7. You'll get prompted that these programs were install and may not function properly. Click OK and follow the instructions. When the computer restarts, you'll have Internet Explorer 6 back. Make sure NOT to install Internet Explorer 7 again.

Now try and install your Printer software.
