scanning error says 'device not ready' hooked up and can print, just can't scan

I hooked up my Dell 968 all in one printer to my ASUS laptop yesterday.   I followed all the instructions and can print, no problem.  I need to scan some documents today and now it's telling me the 'device is not ready'.  Printer's on, hooked up and can print documents from laptop.  Any ideas if there is a setting or something that is preventing me from scanning?

Make sure you installed the scanner software and drivers. See if the Dell All-in-one Center is installed on the laptop. <ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Did you use the Dell 968w Printer disk?

 

Is the OCR Program installed? It's needed to scan and fax.

Start, all programs, ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint, ABBYY FineReader 6.0 Sprint
