Need Help with Office 2003 Reinstall

I am trying to reinstall Office 2003 but each time I try, I get an error msg that tells me my _CD-Rom_ drive has insufficient disk space to complete the operation. This seems very weird, since I am installing to the _hard_ drive. If anyone has any suggestions what to do, I'd be much obliged.

Why am I reinstalling? I had Word and Outlook only on the computer, and want to put on Powerpoint and Excel now.

When I just tried to add those, I kept getting failed installs. I concluded something was wrong with my original installation, so I decided to try uninstalling Office 2003 and reinstalling. Now I cannot complete that action, b/c of the above problem.

I am running Windows XP SP1 on a Dell Inspiron 5100, 1 GB RAM. The hard drive partition to which I want to reinstall is D:, the CD-Rom Drive is E:, and the largest is partition is F:. During the install, I get this msg that says E: does not have enough disk space.

Need to know how many partitions are on the hard drive, and if you have more than one hard drive. Are you using any USB keys? How do you change the default location from the C"\Program Files\Microsoft Office to the D partition?

Thanks for your reply. The hard drive has four partitions: C, D, F, G. They are on one internal hard drive. This is a laptop. I have an external hard drive that I use for backup. I did not have it on during installs. I have a key but it was not inserted during installs.

During install, the Windows installer asks me where I want to install and suggests D:/Program Files/Microsoft Office. I say yes.

Since my post, I have been able to get beyond the "insufficient disk space" problem by using Run from the Start menu, and typing as follows: E:SETUP.EXE LOCALCACHE=F.
(E is the CD-rom drive and F the largest partition). I found this command in the Setup readme for Office 2003. I thought perhaps the Installer was trying to cache to E.

What happens when I do this is Setup goes through what appears to be all the actions, and is about to complete, when I suddenly get an error msg that is something like: "Microsoft Office was not able to complete setup. We apologize for the inconvenience." No error code. It asks me if I want to report the problem to Microsoft.

This is what was occurring originally, which caused me to try to reinstall office.

I have to ask: Why do you have four partitions on one hard drive? This is probably causing the problem. Office likes to reside on the C drive. If you change that, it should not be a major problem. However, if you have four partitions and choose anything but the C drive, I can see problems occurring.

Do you have enough space on the C drive to install Office? If so, uninstall any current versions and reinstall on C.

Try reading the article << here >> for some ideas. If that doesn't help, I'd recommend assigning another drive letter to your CD before installing. I'd use N or T.

I have a dual boot with an OS in each of C and D. I want completely separate environments for different tasks. C is for Music Production and Performance only and has very little running in the background to free up system resources. D is an Internet environment with much on in the background.

F and G are for data that I want separate from the OS and from each other.

This has worked fine for the three years I've had this laptop and only now is there a problem. Office 2003 installed fine on D with Word and Outlook a year ago. It's only when I want to add programs now that there's a problem.

I found the following Microsoft Office Setup.txt file in my temp folder which suggests that, despite using LOCALCACHE=F, Setup is stil trying to cache to E: (my CD-ROM drive. How do I tell it to cache elsewhere?

Success! Issue was Installer continued trying to cache to E: (CD-Rom).

First found a workaround: Changed CD-Rom drive letter. Changed letter of largest partition to E:. Office installed.

Changed drive letters back. Office apps still ran.

Checked to see if could install additional templates for Powerpoint: Got screen that indicated E: had no space.

Instead of doing workaround again, searched registry for “cache.”

Found registry entry which set LocalCacheDrive for Office to E. Changed it to F. Was under:
MyComputer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\11.0\Delivery\{91110409-6000-11D3-8CFE-0150048383C9}

Then could install additional templates for Powerpoint. Think registry entry was problem.

Thanks for the help.
