Revert to Office 2003, or pay the 2007 licence fee

I have just bought a new Dell Studio laptop, which comes with MS Office 2007 pre-installed as a trial product. My home network consists of three XP systems, (one with MS Office, two with Works) and three Vista Systems, one with StarOffice, one with MS Office( 2003), and the new one, which currently has none.

I have a version of MS Office 2003 Student Edition which I am entitled to install. I assume I'd have to pay for a 2007 install key, although I am still entitiled to use the Student Edition, so it might not be a lot.

What is the down side of de-installing the bundled 2007 package and installing the licensed copy of 2003?

What is the down side of buying a new key and installing 2007 version?

As for the file formats, they are different, but if you choose to stick with Office 2003, you can download and install the Office Compatibility Pack.

As for Windows Update within Vista, there will be absolutely no problems with Office 2003.

Hi David, If you intend to buy an licence key then you wont have to uninstall office 2007. It will just be an case of putting in the new product key which in turn will turn you version of trial Office to full licenced Office. However, I dont see any down side of uninstalling 2007 and installing 2003, have Office 2003 and have no intentions of upgrading to Office 2007, but thats my view.

I was wondering about file formats. Are the .doc formats the same?

I was wondering if Windows Update might have a problem? Will MS Office 2003 create dependencies that Vista update will have issues with?

Thank you.

Hi David, Office 2003 is compatable with Vista, i know i have vista and office 2003. As for your formats there is an software fix to allow word 2007 to be viewed in word 2003., went looking for it, but cant find it now.

So some time later, I get to use MS Office 2007 at work, there is a huge learning issue, they've re-written the whole menu structure and finding the buttons for things you know what to do  is jolly hard.

Glad I stuck with 2003.
