Most of the storage admins were "promoted" from server admin to storage admin, when the company they worked for suddenly decided to buy some storage array and somebody had to manage that device.

If you can find a consultancy company that needs storage consultants or admins who are willing to invest time and money in your education to become a Proven Professional, that's another possibility.

If you already know a lot about storage arrays, SANs, HBAs it's way easier to get a contract at some company as the new storage trainee than to start from scratch.

My name is Rob Koper and I'm based in the Netherlands, I work for an inovative EMC partner called Open Line Consultancy (www.openline.nl) and we do projects, have long term contracts with customers to remotely support their storage and we place colleagues at customer's sites to help the local admins keep everything up and running.

I'm a proven professionel since 2004 and I hold the following certifications:

Implementation Engineer Expert on Clariion (IEe)

Technology Architect Specialist on Clariion (TA)

Implementation Engineer Specialist on Symmetrix/DMX (IE)

Technology Architect Specialist on Symmetrix/DMX (TA)

Well, to enter this industry you need know storage fundamentals. One of the easiest and best ways from my point of view is to buy EMC ISM book and EMC Proven Professional Starter Kit that includes voucher to pass your first EMC exam (e20-001 EMC information storage and managment) and get certified. This book and course covers all required storage fundamentals and best material to prepare to exam. Then when you get certified it is easier to find interesting offers and to get employed. That's it and nothing more.

Good luck!

Hi Saagar,

This was the same question haunted me an year ago. I too was a student graduating from Shri Mata Vaishno Devi University an year ago. Becoz of a session I attended by EMC in my college, I decided to take up the certification Information Storage and Management (E20-001) and made the certification achievement visible in numerous job portals like Naukri.com, Monster.com. As soon I graduated out from my college I was invited to attend interviews from various companies like IBM, HSBC GLT and many more. But luckily I came to know about EMC recruiting graduates in India in June 2010 and due to the certification I had an edge over others. So I advise you to do the certification and make it visible/leverage in numerous job portals. You can read my posts below in ECN and keep in touch to get more information when EMC will be recruiting graduates in India.

After the acquisition of Sun bye Oracle , the work fell and my company ask me to join into new skill work. I'm working with VMware ESX  , Linux and
