2970 Server CPU Support on Y436H

Could use some help as I'm racking my brain.

I'm trying to resurrect a PowerEdge 2970 after a motherboard failure.
The new board is a
CN-0Y436H Rev A02

I've tried 3 different AMD Opteron 2427 CPU's and I get the same result on each of them.

"This system does not support Opteron(TM) NPT family 10h dual-core processors."

Aren't these six-core chips I'm using?!

I get no error messages on the server display (no orange light) and I only get the above message upon 1st start with the motherboard battery removed and put back in.  Subsequent restarts gets the fans to spin and then the machine shuts down, acting like it just won't boot.

What am I doing wrong here?

Hello Jason_DocMntn,

You may need to source the same original motherboard if you have new sideplane and embedded ESX.

The Part# Y436H willl not work. Version 2 of the motherboard introduced support for  Istanbul Processors along with having current BIOS. Version 3 is the original one on your system.

Part# JKN8W -  PWA,PLN,SV,TRPM,PE2970,V3

MB, TRPM, Micro Star ( Service Kit C8CXW - Required for new sideplane & embedded ESX, BIOS v4.1.0, Dec 2009)

Part# H535T - PWA,PLN,SV,TRPM,PE2970,V2

MB, TRPM, Micro Star (Service Kit KWNMM -Required for Istanbul Processors, BIOS v4.0.4, June 2009)

Part# Y436H  - PWA,PLN,SV,DELL,TRPM,PE2970

MB, TRPM, Micro Star (Required for Shanghai Processors, BIOS v3.0.1, Nov 2008)

BIOS 4.0.4  Added support for the new Six-Core AMD Opteron(TM) Processor.

Apply latest BIOS : 4.1.1  here : https://dell.to/3cpIG27

I hope this helps.

Thank you for the PM with service tag.

Yours does have the updated sideplane:  PWA,RSR,SV,DELL,PE2970,SPLN,V2

I would recommend Part# JKN8W -  PWA,PLN,SV,TRPM,PE2970,V3

Hi, could you refer to this?

https://dell.to/3iUDUMP

Process : Up to two Dual-Core AMD Opteron™ 2200 series processors at up to 2.8 GHz

Hope this helps and have a good one.

Can't argue with that document.

However, my PowerEdge 2970 that I'm fixing, where it's motherboard died, had 1 Opteron 2427 in it from the start.  I'm the original owner of it, originally bought direct from Dell.

Dead motherboard:

Hello,

Looking at the list of validated parts, I do see the following:

2.2/2.2GHz AMD Opteron Dual Istanbul, 2427, 6MB, 75W

I looked at the list of motherboards, and the v2 of the board listed that it was required for Istanbul processors. The part number you listed for your motherboard appears to be the original board design, or a v1. If I'm reading this correctly, I think you'll need a different board. You might also look at updating the BIOS, though. If you aren't on the latest BIOS, I'd do that first as newer BIOS can add feature support. If the BIOS doesn't do it though, the latest board I show is a v4. You can get the service kit with part number PRDXH, or F698T).

Thank you Charles!  Our server shipped from Dell in March of 2010.

What could I look at to confirm the ESX / Backplane situation?

Seeking V2 and/or V3 might be easier than just looking for a V3.

I'm going to try and clarify for you 1st but I think I'm following that the motherboard I'm trying to use won't like these processors I have.

Original Motherboard (Dead) = CN-0JKN8W Rev A00 had working Opteron 2427

New Motherboard = CN-0Y436H Rev A02 will not post with Opteron 2427

It appears that a higher revision motherboard model won't work with the same CPU's?

I'll have to Google a way to update the BIOS if I can't get the machine to post....not done this before.

Hello,

Tip: I am able to find your original part Part# JKN8W (kit: C8CXW ) : https://dell.to/301Ymno

I can bet if it sold with Part# JKN8W it probably has the updated sideplane.  If you would like to private message me your service tag I can look at the original build information.
