Dell PowerEdge R720 6gps to 12gbps
Hi
I have a PE R720 and would like to upgrade to 12gbps storage speeds.
1.) Can I just install a perc 840 to accomplish? (aside from drives of course)
Or is there more involved? Such as backplane etc.

The H840 won't be supported in the R720 server, as that is a 14th generation controller in a 12th generation server. There isn't a controller capable of running at those 12gbps speeds that are supported on the R720, but if you were to try, even though it is still unsupported, you would be better off trying an H830.
Just to clarify, as I assumed of the controller you listed, you are wanting for external storage correct?

No Internal. I think I found what I was looking for in that the 12th generation server is on pcie buss version 3.0 and therefore incapable of 12gbps.Correct?
