Dell R720 - FAN 4 still runs after shutdown
Hi guys,
I'm facing problem described bellow, I've got used server R720. It was taken from production environment as fully functional piece. First run was pretty smooth. Also shutdown. So I started with updating all firmware: BIOS, iDRAC, NIC, Perc, .... etc. And here comes my problem:
After updating all FW parts to the newest versions and shutdown system I heard that FAN nr.4 is still running (I removed the cover and checked it). No other fan is running while system is shutdown - only fan 4, it runs on low speed, approx 150-200r/min. This behaviour lasts since FW was upgraded. I know this can be non problematic, but..... I use this server for home/study purposes and every noise is unwanted while system is down. I don't wanna always unplug power cable after shutdown.
Can somebody give me a hint what I did wrong? Thanks in advance.

I haven't seen this before, but what I would suggest is to perform a racadm racret on the iDrac. Then power down the server, remove the ac cable and hold down the power button for 20 seconds. After that then open the cover of the server and locate the NVRAM_CLR jumper on the motherboard, as seen below.
Move the jumper over and then install the ac cables and power the server. After clearing the NVRam you can power down and then restore the jumper to its original location.
Let me know if that resolves the issue, if not then move fan #4 to another location in the server and see if the issue follows that fan, or stays at that slot.

Hi Chris,
I performed all what you wrote upper, it didn't help, fan is still running after system shutdown.

Also hard reset didn't solve my problem. I can hear that FAN is not running on constant speed, looks like something controls him.

I have the exact same problem in my R720. (Even the fan is number 4). I'm going to try your solution. Thanks !!
