Is the Seagate ST9900805SS supported by the PE-R610?

PowerEdge R610

BIOS: 6.6.0
iDrac6 FW: 2.91 (build 02)
Lifecycle Controler FW: 1.6.5.12
64GB RAM
PERC H700 Integrated FW: 12.10.7-0001
2 x Seagate Savvio 15K.2 146GB HDDs (RAID-1)
OS: VMware ESXi 6.0.0 Update 3 Patch 100 (build-9313334) Kernel 6.0.0 (x86_64) (Dell Customized Image of VMware ESXi 6.0 U3 A12)
All diagnostics run Ok without errors.

I added 2 x Seagate Savvio 10K.5 ST9900805SS 900GB HDDs configured as RAID-1 and when I try to create a VMFS datastore the drive lights turn orange and ESXi host becomes unstable and must be restarted.

Thinking of a potential issue with VMware ESXi, I tried to install openSUSE Leap 15 and the drive light became orange too causing the installation to fail.

Running Nautilus SAS-SATA-SSD firmware update utility A50 in automatic mode simply ignores the drives.

I would appreciate any assistance with this case

Thanks in advance!

Hi,

Are the drives Dell drives? We only validate drives with our firmware on them.

I did but they have not replied yet.

My server is currently working with a 3 x Dell Savvio 15K.2 ST9146852SS 146GB  configured as RAID5, and 3 SATA drives configured as JBOD.

I cannot believe the cheap SATA drives work with my PERC H700 and the fancy 900GB don't.

I am thinking about trying with a single 9000GB drive. Do you think the timeout would affect a single drive operation as much as an array?

You could see if Seagate has any updates for them. While we do not block usage of non Dell drives the timeouts might not be correct for the controller and that might be why they are going offline.

No, they are not so I guess that explains why the Nautilus does not recognize the drives but shouldn't they work anyway on my R610?

My PERC H700 controller recognizes them and I am able to create virtual drives with them and initialize the VDs.

I am stuck with 4 Seagate ST9900805SS 900GB SAS drives I recently bought trying to improve my server but have been unable to use them.

Would you please advise?

Thanks!

Understood but the available firmware only works on Dell drives that's why I asked about a possible tweaking either for the drives or for the PERC H700.

BTW do you the difference apart from the firmware between my Seagate ST9900805SS and a similar model from Dell?

You can try it, it may work better.

The only public information is in the release notes for the hard drive firmware, what the actual changes are is not usually listed and the only way to make the changes is in the firmware.

I will.

Could you point out to where I can read more about the drives timeout?

Is there any way to tweak them or the PERC H700  to get everything working?

I tried everything and was unable to get those drives working on the R610. I returned them to the seller.

I strongly suggest to get Dell-branded disk drives.

Hello, Thanks for reply. Are you think If I using the external hardware RAID, Ex: LSI 9260, LSI 9271 or more. It's work? I'm not sure it can resolve.

As I wrote before, I suggest to get Dell branded/certified drives.

I just got 4 of those, configure them as a RAID-5 and everything is working without any glitch.

BTW this is going to be my last post on this matter.

I'm tested on LSI 9271-8i.

It's not work.
