Have found the answer to the memory modules, the only modules it will accept are below:

Memory Architecture 72-bit ECC PC-266 registered DDR SDRAM DIMMs, with 2-way interleaving Memory module sockets four 72-bit wide 168-pin DIMM sockets

Memory module capacities 128-MB, 256-MB, 512-MB, 1-GB, or 2-GB registered DDR SDRAM DIMMs, rated for 266-MHz operation

Minimum RAM 256 MB

Maximum RAM 8 GB

Looks like I cannot use them...however does anyone know about whether the bios needs upgrading?

Thanks in advance

Thanks for the response...I also had another response from Dell Support as below:

Hi Natasha,

Bios A06 is latest version for that server.
PowerEdge 1750 support 72-bit ECC PC-266 registered DDR SDRAM DIMMs, with 2 way interleaving.
Although specification below seems to be the same I don't have information, what that crucial model validated to use in that system. If you would like to purchase memory for your server you can contact with one of our authorized partners:
www.servicesource.co.uk
www.upgrade.co.uk

Part number for 1GB module with similar specification is 9U175.

Regards,

Now I'm confused with regards to the BIOS...:emotion-42:...will try and see if it accepts the new memory....

Thanks again

I'm presuming you can just upgrade to A12 without having to update to any other the other releases?

I'm feeling a bit cautious as it's been a long time since I've applied any bios updates to any machine.

Thanks

This is the history of BIOS releases for PE1750:

BIOS A06 was released on 11/24/2003; and there have been two “Criticality:  Urgent” releases since then, I would go with A12.  In addition, A12 includes a change for “potential data integrity issue”; you can read the “Fixes and Enhancements” section for each release and determine if the changes of each particular release are something it would  benefit you.

Why doesn't Dell tell anyone what was changed in their bios releases?

Without that information, there is no way to determine how important the upgrade is.

From the support.dell.com page of the server you are interested on, you can sign to receive email notifications when new BIOS/drivers/firmaware/etc. are posted on the web.

When you are in the server page select “Product Support” on the left box (“Browse By Category”); then “Technical Subscriptions” and “sign up for new updates”; there, you will be able what component to select you want to receive information about, there is also some other options to customize your notification . . .  I think you may need to enter the service tag for these services.
