M3800 freezing with sound when using NVIDIA Graphics

Hi I have a M3800 running ubuntu 14.04 and when ever I use the NVIDIA graphics card as opposed to the Intel integrated one my computer freezes every once in a while but sound can still be heard, the keyboard and mouse do not work. The way I get out of it is by pressing ctl + alt + f1-6 to go t TTY  and then back to  F7. I was using the NVIDIA binary driver 346.96 and switched to the 340.93 but that did not change anything.
