Promise Ultra 66 IDE Controller

I recently purchased a Promise Ultra 66 PCI IDE Controller as the old one had problems and have since installed it along with Promise drivers. However I see in the DEVICE MANAGER a Yellow icon and in the performance tab page I see message "DRIVE C IS USING MS-DOS COMPATABILITY MODE".

System - Dell Dimension XPS T500, 256 Ram, Maxtor 13 Gb Harddisk on Ultra 66 Primary controller. Sony RW Drive CRX100 on Secondary of motherboard, floppy drive, Creative Soundblaster Card IRQ 10 (Soundblaster Live! Value), Dial-Up-Adapters, HCFModem MDP 3880W, Dell P780 monitor, SCSI controller-Promise Ultra 66 IDE controller card, NVIDIA TNT 2 M64 AGP display Card.

I have searched a lot on the web and also read the two Microsoft Knowledge Base articles on possible causes. However none of the suggestions seem to work.

1. Tried installing / uninstalling / re-booting / allowing the PC to detect the new hardware / changed the PCI slot / disabled the Primary IDE controller as my (Sony CDRW Drive is connected on Secondary of the motherboard ) / Re-installing Winows 98 Second Edition / Running the System Tools Regsitry Checker, File Version Checker / config.sys & autoexec.bat / ios.log / bootlog.txt / diagnostic startup / checing IRQ conflicts / and all combinations of the above with Drivers from my --Dell Resource CD, --Dell Download Site and the --Promise.com download site. No luck.

I have finally reverted to disabling in the system BIOS IRQ 3 as I wanted the Promise Ultra 66 driver to use IRQ 5 that was free and disabled Primary IDE from Bios... (there was some talk in the Dell documentation that COM2 uses IRQ 3 if a modem is installed). I then installed the Ultra 66 Card and booted the PC and let it detect the new hardware...after which had it install the Promise Ultra 66 IDE driver files dated 5/18/1999 and that came from the Dell download site. Then shutdown and restart with IRQ3 free as free and I still find the Yellow exclamation icon. Promise Ultra is now on IRQ5.

The registery does not have an entry of NOIDE or BAD_IDE as stated in the Microsoft articles linked below.

I have now exausted all troubleshooting tips that I could find on the forums and web. Tried to chat with a Dell Home PC support rep.. but she directed me to call the 1-800 extended lifetime support number. So here I am in this forum hoping someone could help me. IOS.LOG has entries:-

A few things..... with that generation of computer it was always recommended to use the first PCI slot in the event you encountered problems.  On my XPS T system I have the Promise 66 card install in the second slot and have left the first slot empty for increased air circulation for the graphics card.  With this arrangement my card is using IRQ 3 and only shares that IRQ with PCI Steering which is no problem.  With the XPS T model, the PCI slot a device is installed in will help determine the IRQ received.

Secondly, have you checked the cable from the hard drive to the controller card to insure it isn't faulty or that it is the correct one?  The cable should be a 80 conductor / 40 pin cable in order for the drive to perform at UDMA mode 4 which is ATA 66.  Otherwise if you have accidently used a 40 conductor / 40 pin cable the drive will operate at PIO mode which I believe is the same as DOS compatibility mode.  Also check to see that the cable is installed the right way.  If the ribbon cable is reverse it will only run in PIO mode.

Thirdly, if the only thing on your motherboard controller is the CD drive then move it over to the first IDE port.  There is no reason to have it on the secondary IDE port as the machine will boot from a device attached to the controller card first as long as "add-in" appears before the CD drive in the boot order.

Thanks!  Regarding the connector cables - well I just took the connection at the "Ultra 66 Controller Card End" and after putting in the new Ultra 66 Controller Card, I put the cable back at the same slot in the new card. I never touched the cable end connected to the Hardisk as accessing it is a bit difficult.

Regarding correct type of connector cable - I guess since I never totally took out the cables out of the PC, they are the same as when they came from Dell a few years back and seem to be working.

Regarding moving the Ultar 66 IDE Controller to a different PCI slot - I can try that out. In my system, the first PCI slot is free... then comes the Sound Blaster, then the original slot for the Ultra 66 IDE (now empty), then the Modem and the last slot was free. Currently I have the Ultra 66 in the last slot. I can put it back in the 3rd slot as it was before.... Accessing first PCI slot is again a bit difficult.

Incidentally I called the 1-800 number and my call was attended by a Dell Support rep in India who walked me through installing the Ultra66 IDE driver from my Dell Resource CD. Anyway I followed the steps on phone... but it did not help much. I was told that I would be sent an email on an article on Dell Resource CDs and their Version usage....but have not received it. In the end I was told by the rep. to contact a local support person.!!! So here I am back again. Rgds

Like I said you really don't have to put it in the first slot, just have the card lead the pack by being the first one in line.  Try moving all the cards down a slot until slot #1 and #2 are free.  Then install the Promise card in slot #2 and leave slot #1 free.

Ok, this time I removed all my other PCI Cards -i.e. Sound Blaster & Modem and all the software connected with it using the Device Manager and Add/Remove Programs. I also removed the Promise Ultra 66 IDE PCI Card with ** BIOS Version 1.10A. ** and associated drivers.

Then checked again all the connections and connector cables. Looked at the PC BIOS and set Plug & PLay to NO.

Then installed the Ultra 66 IDE Card on 2nd PCI slot (1st PCI slot is free for display card cooling) and let Windows 98 detect the new hardware. It did and asked for the driver for Ultar 66. I gave the location of the driver as A: and driver date 5/18/1999..... Drivers are installed....system boots up again and still yellow exclaim icon.

Then uninstalled the original driver...re-booted PC and now tried driver version from Dell Resource CD.. same issue.. driver date 5/18/1999

Repeated the same and now tried downloaded driver from Promise.com and same problem.

So now I thought of flashing the Promise BIOS from 1.10A to...?

The flash program gave an error during the second portion of its instructions (after I had backed the original BIOS... as per the instructions.) Error message was 'File Incorrect or not the correct file.' This was for the ul200....BIN file that does the actual BIOS update.

So here I am with no clue as to what to do next. I read through the web site www.pcguide.com

Also read the Dell Documentation on my PC...

Tried changing the PCI card from 2nd slot to 3rd as it was originally... same problem...

Finally I re-installed the Sound Blaster Card... and its driver.... and then the Modem and its drivers....

Checked the IRQs and now Modem is 9 and Sound Blaster is 5 and Promise Ultra is 10.....

No other conflict shows up in Device Manager. I also disabled the Creative Joystick....to free a IRQ and also disabled the Primary IDE as CD-ROM is connected as before on Secondary Master.... on mother board.

PC thank God works and I am able to connect to Internet.... but the MS-DOS Compatability mode error still exists.

Question:- Is the driver I am installing bad.... or is the Promise Ultra 66 Card bad? Can I get the Ultra 66 drivers and BIOS Update program from some other source/website? Should I return the Card and buy an Ultra100 card instead? I bought this card from EBAY auctions for $12.50 + 7.50 shipping. I found many other buyers buying this same card from the seller these past few days and I am wondering how people are installing the drivers.... HELP

Scre**d up after flash Updating the Promise Ultra 66 ATA IDE BIOS
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Details of the Ultra 66 PCI IDE harddisk controller card.

Ultra ATA/66
02-35-991-01-A1
Rev A1
1999/06/15

Promise Chip BIOS  - Ultra V1.10A
                                    PDC20262
                                    1998-9916

I downloaded the drivers from the Promise FTP site and after applying them, found that the driver was listed with a Yellow exclaimation icon in Device Manager. Reading through the FAQs, I then tried to flash update the BIOS from 1.10A using the Promise FTP site BIOS Flash Update file -> Ultra66\Archive\U66B114b0728.ZIP. Files in this zip file were....
            PTIFLSH.EXE    101KB          FileDate 9/13/99
            Ulbios.bin            16KB            FileDate 10/6/99
I ran ptiflash.exe from a boot floppy and took a backup of the old BIOS in my c: drive and then updated the BIOS with file Ulbios.BIN as given above. Till here there was no problem and the system said 'Success and its now okay to re-boot the PC. So powered off the PC and re-booted. (Tried)

However re-booting gives an error message "BIOS Version 1.14 (Build 0728) - - - Cannot find the PCI Device - PDC20262"

System hangs at this stage and even clearing the NVRAM does not help. Could anyone please HELP!!!

Harddisk is Maxtor 13 Gb ......Ultra 4... 7200

Ok the seller sent another Promise Ultra 66 IDE Card y'day as a replacement and I plugged it into the PCI slot. (BIOS version 1.10A  again! & seems used/cracked on the Primary connector). Then booted the system and BIOS shows correct version and hardiskDMA 4... windows 98 message for 'PCI RAID controller' looking for drivers comes. I gave it the location of the drivers at my A: floppy drive. Driver file 5/18/1999. Loaded the driver and rebooted the machine. Same Yellow exclaim icon! So went to device manager and updated the driver with driver dated 8/17/1999. Same cycle... yellow icon remains.

I do not want to try flashing the BIOS version 1.10A..... IRQ is 5 for Promise Ultra 66 this time.... 3 is free.

Turned on Plug & Play on PC BIOS. No effect. Where can I get a proper driver for the Promise Ultra 66 with BIOS 1.10A? I have exported the System Information into Text format. I will upload the IRQs and I/Os memory lines.... Thanks.

Does anybody else have an Promise Ultra 66 BIOS version 1.10A and the appropriate drivers? I need some real help from DELL SUpport!

Strange no one seems to be responding to this post. Okay okay I know Promise 66 is old stuff. But what is a challenge to the pros then?
