Control Center upgrade 5.2.0.3.0 to 5.2 SP5

What? No takers?

Mack. I had no problem upgrading to SP5. I was an early adopter. and I saw no need to back anything up. no issues arose as a result.

I have personally upgraded two ECC servers and have supervised five others remotely. ECC is complicated and lacks a certain robustness you might be used to in other software. I always make sure I have performed a hot backup and a repository export according to the instructions. I needed to do a restore in one situation and it came back exactly as it should have (pleasantly surprised). It did take an EMC ticket to resolve the original problem. The remote offices had one box that was completely hosed, so my record with this SP is 5 successes, 1 loss, and 1 restore, which based on my experience back to 4.x days, is not too shabby.

At the very least, I would be applying the separate Oracle patches and Java patches as release by EMC. These are validated vulnerabilities in your infrastructure and should be fixed. The SP5 release notes contain detailed notes on what is fixed in the latest SP. Personally, I would treat these as more akin to Windows SPs (required) than to BIOS updates (nice to do).

Without knowing your specific environment we can not comment on how much benefit you receive from the upgrade. In general, SP5 is better because its newer and has proven to be the most solid version currently available.

Some of the improvements in SP5 include support for greater connectivity and firmware, hosts and o/s, 64-bit support, enhancements to console and operations, enhancement to the store - increase in the size of HEAT, StorageScope enhancements. enhancements to the Agents, and SMI-S 1.1 support.

Darn, Why does EMC always refer to pay services? I have other vendors willing to break thier backs to assist in qa from customers. now that I am a Customer THIS IS DRIVING ME NUTS..... WHERE IS THE customer service EMC use to tout?

My upgrade to SP5 went smoothly. However, the Storage Pool option is no longer in ECC as far as I can see,

I just posted about this in another thread as well. The same thing happened to me on the upgrade from sp3 to sp4. It turns out there was some problem with the ARM licence not translating properly and getting dropped. We had to get a new licence code from support.

I hear you Bruce! I'm not in the same province as our primary ECC infrastructure so I have to plan a trip for upgrades. I'm holding off on sp5 and waiting to see if v6.0 is going to be worth the trip.
