Prevent Automatic Recycle Bin Emptying

There are several posts from last year requesting that SA comes with the option to prevent automatic clearing of the recycle bin. Many of us use the recycle bin to hold onto deleted files for a while in case we need to restore them, it's saved my bacon several times.

In as least one post from last year, Dell said this option would be added but it hasn't been yet. Is this still on the way?

I was told in a direct message that there's an update coming in August that'll fix this.

If this fix eventually arrives I hope Dell will also allow users to set each automated scan configured at Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers to NEVER in addition to Weekly / Monthly as I suggested in my 22-May-2020 post at SA, configure to NOT empty the recycle bin?.

Right now the only way to prevent the automated "Check PC's Performance" scan (which includes the Clean Files scan that empties the recycle bin) is to disable all automated scans and optimizations.

Seems like this has been an issue for a while. I'm finding quite a few irate support threads. Technically speaking this doesn't seem like it would be difficult to achieve.

The recycle bin had saved my bacon many times. This is a real issue for me and several others too it would seem.

Are there any workarounds for this? Would adding the recycle bin folder to Windows 10 protected folders work perhaps?

I've just manually run all the utilities in SupportAssist and it hasn't emptied the recycle bin. Has this issue been fixed or was that a one-off coincidence?

Just run it and it had cleared out the recycle bin this time. Seems to randomly clear it and not clear it. Hopefully the August update will fix this!

Hi, we just want to keep you update that the Support Assist team is working on this and there should be an enhancement list scheduled for August release.

Thank you for your status update about the upcoming fix to stop SupportAssist from emptying the Recycle Bin.

Is it possible that one of the SupportAssist optimization scans (e.g., Clean Files, Tune Performance) is also cleaning my Windows registry?

I always have automatic scans and optimization turned off in SupportAssist [Options (gear icon) | Settings | Automate Scans and Optimizations | Scan Your System and Drivers at: | DISABLED] but I accidentally clicked the blue Run All Button on the History tab on 05-May-2021. The next day I scanned my registry with the CCleaner Free utility (Registry | Scan for Issues) and was shocked to see that every previous registry entry found by CCleaner with a potential "issue" had been wiped.

As a general rule I never use a registry cleaner and only scan my registry with CCleaner on occasion if I need to look for remnants of an uninstalled software program that might be causing problems. I haven't run any optimization scans with SupportAssist since 05-May-2021 and CCleaner now shows I've slowly accumulated over 50 of these harmless registry entries with potential "issues" since then.

Just an FYI that the section titled Tune Performance in the Dell support article SupportAssist for Business PCs with Windows OS Frequently Asked Questions states in part that functions include "Checking the registry for invalid entries, missing file references, or broken links and deleting them" which seems to confirm that SupportAssist optimization scans for home PCs will also delete "invalid" entries in the Windows registry.

While I am happy that Dell is finally going to be revising SupportAssist to prevent it from emptying the Recycle Bin, I think it's much more dangerous that this utility is also deleting "invalid" entries in the Windows registry that are almost always harmless.  Microsoft's official policy at Microsoft Support Policy for the Use of Registry Cleaning Utilities strongly advises against the use of any type of registry cleaner because of the potential harm they can do.  From that MS support policy:

"... Some products such as registry cleaning utilities suggest that the registry needs regular maintenance or cleaning. However, serious issues can occur when you modify the registry incorrectly using these types of utilities. These issues might require users to reinstall the operating system due to instability. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved without a reinstallation of the Operating System as the extent of the changes made by registry cleaning utilities varies from application to application... A damaged Windows registry can exhibit a range of symptoms including excessive CPU utilization, longer startup and shutdown times, poor application functionality or random crashes or hangs. These random crashes and hangs can ultimately lead to data loss due to the systems inability to save data back to the storage location during the occurrence...."


I hope that Dell will also consider removing the registry cleaning function from Dell SupportAssist optimization scans.

So there was an update today. I ran it but it still emptied the recycle bin. Is another update coming this month or has the change been abandoned?
