supportassist wont run

Every time I try to run support assist it will get to this message 

"A new version of SupportAssist is available and will be installed on this PC.

Depending on the speed of your PC, this update can take several minutes"

and then it will be stuck there for hours, never updating or downloading or whatever it is suppose to be doing. this has been going on for several months.  I've tried uninstalling/re-installing and it will get to a point were it looks like it is going to work and then it says ran into a problem try again later, and then I get the same message again...
