Creating the Disk Groups
Can you please explain how to create disk groups.
(we want to create all 10krpm disks are in one group, all 15k rpm disks are in one group and all iSCSI disks are in one group).

disk groups are created by EMC CEs, typically they are grouped by disk parameters (speed, type) but you can also group them for logical workload separation, for example if you need to have x number of spindles for Exchange implementation you can have EMC put them in a separate disk group.

You cannot create a disk group. You can rename them but the only way to create a disk group is via a bin file change.

can you please tell me the syntax of the command to rename the particular diskgroup.
1. Can a single disk group contains different types of disks (ex. FC,SATA, Flash drives)
2. Cam a single disk group contains the disks from different locations (ex. different DAEs and from different Storage bays)

1) CE can put different types in one group but it's a bad idea as you will experience unpredictable performance
2) Yes
To rename default disk group name (Solutions enabler 7.1 and higher) :
symconfigure -sid 207 -cmd
“set disk_group 4 disk_group_name = flash_dsks;” -v -nop commit

Yeah you can only name a disk group on a V-max which has a minimum code of 5874 family; 5875 is available.

So I have a related question... how hard is it to re-arrange disk groups. I know it's a bin change. But if I have three DGs with say, 30 drives each and I want one DG with all 90 drives... do able? Do all the drives have to be empty? If yes can a shell game be used?

It's as easy (or as hard) as coming up with the several thousand dollars to pay for a BIN load. We recently did this to consolidate disk groups prior to adding a new drive type and it did not require any special considerations on how the drives were used. No production impact on performance or availability. Just pay for the BIN load... take a one week config lock on the array, and cross your fingers :-)
Seriously though, it is not a problem. We did it on a pair of DMX3 arrays running 5773 so you should be good to go. Just engage your CE to kick it off.
