EMC VMAX support IBM z/VM Flashcopy

This shop migrated off IBM DS-6800 over to EMC VMAX.

Mainframe z/890 platform this shop is only using z/VM Version 5 Release 3.0, service level 1002 (64-bit). From a high level, the original plan in early hours of the morning was bring down DBs to allow flashcopy source to target DASD then bring the DBs back online then run tape backups off the targets.

Does the EMC VMAX subsystem use IBM z/VM Flashcopy?

Not having very much success attempting to test IBM Flashcopy from z/VM Version 5 Release 3.0, service level 1002 (64-bit).

Hi Manny,

The V-Max does support running IBM FlashCopy. In order to run Flashcopy, a flag (Enable FlashCopy) in the IMPL.bin file must first be enabled (set to Yes).

Email also sent to Mike Quinn (EMC), Bruce Opachinski (EMC) Rich Vipond (EMC)

Morning Mike, Bruce, Dora,

Just to get everyone on the same sheet of music.

Recap what this shop is running:

1.) Not running z/OS only z/VM Version 5 Release 3.0, service level 1002 (64-bit)

2.) Pentagon EMC VMAX Serial# 01676 owned by the MVS group.

Conclusion? IBM Flashcopy Will or Will NOT work on z/VM Version 5 Release 3.0, service level 1002 (64-bit)

Statements:

Managed to open a discussion https://community.emc.com/people/Costa-5U3Kr Dora Costa states:

"Hi Manny, The V-Max does support running IBM FlashCopy. In order to run Flashcopy, a flag (Enable FlashCopy) in the IMPL.bin file must first be enabled (set to Yes)."

Bruce Opachinski states: "What Rich is conveying is that in z/VM 5.3 only this format of the FlashCopy command is available. The customer would have to upgrade to at least z/VM 5.4 if they want the format of the command they were attempting to enter. So as a result at the z/VM 5.3 level, no FlashCopy incremental or persistent sessions are allowed. Thanks"

Rich Vipond states: " I have accepted this issue from Gene Corbett and have found that your commands are using the incorrect format of the FlashCopy Command: & We also tried to insure the VMAX, serial xxxxxxxxxxx, has FLASHCOPY enabled but this will need to be verified by the CE on site if you are still experiencing issues…"

Command was issued Rich's format, continue to get the following error:

FLASHC E300 0 END TO E224 0 END

HCPCMM296E Status is not as required - E300; an unexpected condition

HCPCMM296E occurred while executing a FLASHCOPY command, code = AF.

Ready(00296); T=0.01/0.01 07:50:37

Best Regards,

Manny
