BMC on Poweredge2900

I have a Poweredge 2900 that I have configured the BMC on from the boot-up option (CTL+E) and I still cannot access that system's BMC either through HTTP(s) or Telnet. What am I doing wrong? Do I need some special software to be able to remotely restart/power-down/power-cycle the server? That's really all I want to do. I have already updated the firmware and rebooted. Still unable to telnet or connect via web browser. What am I doing wrong? I won't swear that I don't have an IP conflict, but I'm pretty sure I don't. So, how do I access the BMC to power-cycle/reboot/power-down/etc remotely?

Disregard. I got it working now. The instructions on the Dell website and in the install archive are VERY confusing to me. They could have just said "install this package on the workstation you want to use to manage your server(s) and then go to a command prompt and change to the location where you installed the software and run 'ipmitool -H -U -P " THAT would have been SO much easier than who knows how many pages on the website and a bunch of junk in the "documents" section of the install.

A BMC manual is here:

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

lists how to connect and the commands.

I'm confused. Am I supposed to install the BMC software on my WORKSTATION or on the SERVER I want to control? From the instructions and the "compatibility" it would appear I'm supposed to install this on the SERVER, but it wont' do much good if I'm trying to manage a server that might be locked up or have an otherwise inaccessible O/S at any given time.

I really know NOTHING about using the BMC, and would appreciate a little more information than just pointing me to the manual, which explains very little!

Why do I have instructions that say that I can just use Hyperterminal to telnet to the BMC? Where do I get the software to install on my workstation? I can't seem to find it to download from Dell. I don't know that I ever had that software even when the servers were brand new. The instructions I got from my sale rep's Storage Specialist seem to indicate that I don't need any special software, that it'll just connect over TCP/IP on port 23. This is on a Poweredge 2900, which utilizes the on-board Ethernet connection, NOT a serial-port connection. Does that make any difference?

Neither work with the BMC, it only works with the SOL Proxy setup.  I think the server manual has the details on what changes need to be made in the BIOS.  Then you will need the SOL Proxy that is part of IT Assistant, and a good VT100/ANSI terminal emulator to communicate with the BMC.  I have done that setup before, and it is extremely sensitive to network latency.  I think you'd be better off with a DRAC 5 card in most circumstances.
