DSU stops working

Hello,

on our PowerEdge servers we use DSU for Dell system updates.
It is executed once a week via task scheduler.

For a couple of weeks it works just fine but then suddenly breaks.

Starting it manually gives the following error:

After reinstall it works again for a couple of weeks before it breaks again.

We see this problem on every(!) server at the same time.
We had it at least with version 1.9.0, might be with 1.8 but not sure.

Any ideas what is happening there? Or even better: a solution?

Thanks in advance

Hello backworker,

I have an update from the engineer. He was able to reproduce the issue and has a temporary work around for now will be working on a fix for next versin.

Deleting this folder when the issue occurs will fix it:

c:\programdata\dell\dell emc system update\dell_dup

Hello backworker,

Have you tried an uninstall of previous version before installing current version and check results?

Helo Charles,

I think so, but I am not sure.

But we have seen this problem also on freshly installed servers.

And for the first couple of weeks everythink works find, but then suddenly breaks.
Surprisingly for all servers at the same time (at least the same week, as we use the tool once a week).

Kind regards
backworker

Hello backworker,

Thank you, I'll pass this to our Systems Management engineer.

What is the OS?

Hello Charles,

usually I reinstall dsu directly after I realized the problem.

This time I did the reinstall only for these servers that were in maintenance this morning.

The other servers still show the issue:
A simple "dsu" without any parameters is sufficient. Even "dsu /i" throws the error.
The weekly script uses "dsu /n /u"

No error occurs when using "dsu /v"

Kind regards

backworker

Hello backworker,

When the issue occurs do you wait a few hours or even the next day or so and try again before reinstalling?

We haven't had this issue reported before.

Could you provide your OS and syntax you are using to invoke it?

Hello Charles,

great, that works.

I just tested one server, but I am optimistic, that it will work on the other servers as well.

Many thanks to you and the engineer.

Kind regards
Sascha

Hello Charles,

today I can confirm that deleting the mentioned folder worked on all our servers.

Many thanks again.

This looks to be fixed in DELL EMC System Update 1.9.2.  I was getting it in 1.9.1 on several systems.  Updated to 1.9.2, thanks to this post, and the problem went away.  I wouldn't have thought to look for a newer version if you hadn't communicated that the issue had been acknowledge and was being worked on.  Thanks.
