Firmware upgrade on DELL Poweredge R720 failure with DSU

Question

Hi, when running a firmware upgrade with DSU one of our servers a Poweredge R720 failed both an iDRAC and BIOS upgrade.The iDRAC upgrade failed with the statement 'Failed to cancel firmware update process' but when checking the log file itself it tells===Update was not applied===Did anyone have a similar error before and is it safe to reboot the machine? Here are the two error messages of the failed updates and I've attached the log files. Installing iDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_XTPX4_LN_2.41.40.40_A00...The version of this Update Package is newer than the currently installed version.Software application name: iDRACPackage version: 2.41.40.40Installed version: 1.57.57.00Device: iDRAC  Application: iDRAC  Failed to cancel firmware update processiDRAC-with-Lifecycle-Controller_Firmware_XTPX4_LN_2.41.40.40_A00 could not be installed while the bios update failed with terminate called after throwing an instance of 'smbios::DerefNullPointerImpl'  what():  tried to dereference non-existent token/tmp/BIOS_CR1RR_LN_2.5.4.BIN-36693.hYkKRe/spsetup.sh: line 1224: 37331 Aborted                 (core dumped) $cmd $@.The update failed to completeBIOS_CR1RR_LN_2.5.4 could not be installedPlease reboot the system for update(s) to take effectDone! BENSCHMIDT,

Could you verify the current version for the BIOS? I ask because from the sounds of it the server is very far behind in updates. If this is the case then we will need to walk the iDrac and BIOS to current, not just jump to the latest. Doing so can cause serious issue on the motherboard, and your iDrac is currently 9 updates back. So lets start by confirming where we are starting from and I can get you the links.

Hello Chris, dsu reports the BIOS to be at version 2.2.2 and wanted to install version 2.5.4 Software application name: BIOSPackage version: 2.5.4Installed version: 2.2.2 Thanks,Ben

Thank you. The BIOS doesn't appear as behind as the idrac.  Run these in order iDrac 2.10 BIOS 2.4.3 iDrac 2.21 BIOS 2.5.4 iDrac 2.40 iDrac 2.50.50 After that the server should be current.

I have an R720 with at a fairly old f/w level and would like to update it to the latest version. Could you recommend an update path?

Current versions:

iDRAC - 1.35.35

BIOS - 1.6.0

Dear Chris, Please advise on how best we can walk our BIOS and iDrac together so that the drivers are upto date. Our versions are iDrac - 1.51.51.00 and BIOS 2.0.22 Thanks Chris
