How to create flash BIOS Header file

Hi,

I am reading Dell Openmanage Deployment Toolkit v1.3 P.41.  In order to use BIOSFLASH.EXE, I need to create a header file.
I followed the instruction in that page, quote "you can generate the .hdr file from the executable file by entering the following command:  -writehdrfile".

But it didn't work.  Any idea??

Thanks.

After I posted the previous message, I talked to a Dell tech person. He helped me solved the problem. I guess that Dell can described the steps more clearly in the document.

In order to generate the Header file, we have to use the Floppy version (so you got the right version). What you need to do is:

- run the floppy version that you just downloaded, which will create two files in the floppy disk,
- goto dos mode; cd to your floppy disk; you will see an .exe file (like xxxx-AxxC.exe)
- run that file (xxxx-AxxC.exe) with "-writehdrfile" option,
- then the header (.hdr) file is magically created right there.

Not sure this will help your situration or not.

You are doing the command correctly, however it seems that this only works for BIOS files packaged to run from inside Windows. I'm in the same situation here. I have a few older Optiplex SX260 machines and I can only download BIOS updates that are for Floppy disk installations. When I try to make the .hdr from the Non-Packaged Format it wants to actually run the file. When I extract the files it shows a Setup.exe file that can't make a .hdr file.

It would be nice if Dell would standardize their BIOS file formats so that they work with OpenManage Tools.

I tried that with the GX260 latest BIOS gx260A09.exe -writehdrfile and no go. Just did nothing. I have done others successfully (Workstations), but the Optiplex just don't want to cooperate. :smileysad:

Thanks

I got the GX260 bios to work, but I had to boot to DOS in order to do it. Just boot a machine using a 98 boot disk and then pop in the gx260 floppy disk you created. You should then be able to create the HDR file.
