IPMI Over LAN - Unable to Login

Hello,

I have an R630 that seemingly out of the blue, stopped allowing me to login via IPMI over LAN. SSH and GUI access with the default credential still worked.

I tried upgrading the firmware to 2.21.21.21 from 2.20.20.20 and issuing a hard reset but the issue still persisted until I "reset" the password back to calvin.

Any idea what could be the cause?

Drew

Hi,

Are you using the iDRAC or just IPMI over LAN? After changing the password back, could you change it back and have it work again?

Hi Josh,

I'm using both. This issue was observed while using ipmitool like below.

"ipmitool -H $IP -U root -P calvin power reset -I lanplus" - Results in Failed to connect to IPMI

From the LC logs

2016-03-28T16:24:17-0500	USR0031 Unable to log in for root from 10.xxx using IPMI over LAN.
2016-03-28T16:23:38-0500	USR0030 Successfully logged in using root, from 10.xxx and SSH.

When I reset the password of the root user this fixed IPMI Over LAN

Are you at the latest BIOS, there were some Intel management engine firmware changes. http://www.dell.com/support/home/us/en/19/Drivers/DriversDetails?driverId=Y5W1R

No other changes were made prior to IPMI over LAN not working with the default username/password.

Once I change the password it starts working again.

This issue just appeared on a different machine. This time I first able to run "racadm racresetcfg -f" which cleared up the issue. Something seems to be corrupting the password thats used only for IPMI Over LAN?

Were there any other changes before this started happening? Are you able to change the password again and it keeps working?

No all these problematic R630's have version 1.2.10. I'm not familiar with the Intel management Engine firmware, how is that related to IPMI Over LAN thats provided by the iDRAC?

The intel management engine is Intel’s implantation of out of band management for IPMI in addition to some other features. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/architecture-and-technology/intel-active-management-technology.html

Not to bring up an ancient thread but I have noticed R430s require the first login via GUI before allowing any CLI interface to be established.

Can anyone confirm this and maybe this is the problem you had Drew? Any way around this, as I really don't want to keep spending ## minutes just logging in via GUI before I can actually get work done as slow as the GUI is to load.

Thanks,

Colton.
