Most efficient way to monitor RAID status on 1600SC/2003SBS

Hi, I'd like to have an alert sent via email when my RAID 1 array fails.  I'm running SBS 2003, so not looking for anything that resource intensive on the server - and since I'm running small business server it doesn't look like IT Assistant is even an option.

What's the best way to accomplish this?

Thanks in advance - joe

Sean, thanks.  Followup question: where can I find documentation on what the failure will appear as in the event log, so I can set up a trigger?

Thanks - Joe

Hi Joe,

For a single server in your case IT assistant is overkill.  You will need a tool like Dell Openmanage Array Manager installed on the PE1600 to monitor the status of the disks.
Details about the events it generates are here :- http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/software/smarrman/marb36/en/eventmon.htm

There are quite a number of utilties on the market that monitor SNMP, application and system event logs and will generate an email alert, you can perhaps find a utilty that suits your environment best from this list.

Sean, thanks.  GFI has an event monitoring app of which there is a free version - http://www.gfi.com/downloads/downloads.aspx?pid=LANSELM&lid=en

Is there a way to trigger an error?  I can trigger an alarm in the array manager but nothing that seems to trigger an entry in the event log.

If not, what's the safest way to test that the array is working?

Thanks - Joe
