Partitions on PE1650, ArrayManager & MS Server2003

Greetings!

I recently purchased a PE1650 that came with NO OS.  I installed MS Server 2003.  When formatting the RAID1 Mirroring HDD (36GB each), I partitioned 4GB for OS and the remainder for other uses.  When using Array Mananger, have encountered an issue that someone else in the forum encountered.  They wrote...

If you go to the downloads for your server, in my case the 2650, and choose Windows server 2003 downloads and choose Openmanage Array manager and download the readme file armdme.txt, at the bottom of the first page under new features in Array Manager 3.4, you will find one line that says, "Array manager does not support Windows disk or volume management on Windows server 2003."  And indeed, it does not. We just got a brand new 2650 preloaded by Dell with server 2003, and when you go into array manager, only the array shows. There is nothing under the disk tab and no disks or volume icons.  Dell had partitioned our raid 5 disk into one large partition and we needed to change that into smaller partitions in order to use disk quotas and I had to uninstall array manager in order to do that. Then I could use disk administrator. I then reinstalled Openmanage and again lost the ability to manage disks and partitions and to change drive letters. I finally uninstalled it again and put the latest version of the fast utility on the server so we can manage arrays AND disks and partitions.

I found Document R37661 dated 2/27/2002 and file A10NTAPP.ZIP.  Is this the correct FAST utility that I need to use so that I can manage the disk and partition to CREATE A DRIVE LETTER for the Partition for use?

I am a rookie at this and need your help!

Hi,

The file you mention is not the latest revision. The Perc Driver, Firmware and Management software must be at compatible revisions. Install these files in order (this is assuming you have the default Perc 3/di controller)

MIKE -

I'm purchasing the hardware controller enabler for our Dell PowerEdge 2500.  Currently, the system volume of this computer is on it's own volume on it's own scsi hard drive.  I know I'll have to re-initialize the drives I want to put in a RAID, but will installing this controller (the PERC-3di) mean I'll have to reinstall the OS on that single volume as well?

Hi,

The Perc 3/di will recognize the information and import it as a "legacy" disk.
http://docs.us.dell.com/docs/storage/Fast2.1/en/ch07.htm#1032964

I would not really advise doing this, due to the fact it would not be redundant, but it is possible. If you do decide to use the legacy disk be extremly careful NOT to initialize it. Doing so would wipe the data. One other note, when you install the controller kit and enable it Raid in the System BIOS there will be warnings to the effect all data will be lost. This is normal, the legacy disk should be imported OK. However, make sure to have a good, verified disaster recovery solution in place.
