R415 - RHEL6 - BMC setup / missing iDRAC problems

I have a R415 that i'm trying to set up iDRAC or whatever is available on these systems for lights out management. I have gone through and configured LOM1 with an IP  and set up a username/password. When going into the setup under cntrl-E it is titled BMC Configuration Utility (not iDRAC) version Copyright 2011 Dell Inc. All rights reserved 1.61.

BMC firmware version is 1.90.04.

Unified Server Configurator version is 1.5.5.18

Primary backplane firmware revision is 1.10

I have IPMI set to "ON", set the lan parameters to "Shared" (LOM1), and set the IP and netmask appropriately. Are there other setting in this that i need to change and HOW do i access the system to work on it when it is offline.

What the heck do i have to do to make this work?

Oly_R,

To clarify, the BMC is the Baseboard Management Controller, that shares the same some of the same logic with the iDrac6. When the iDrac is installed it takes over the BMC's function. Now with the issue you are having and that you are seeing "BMC Configuration Utility" at the top, it sounds like there isn't a iDrac installed in the server. That interface will say "idrac Configuration Utility" when it is present.

Now if you don't have a iDrac installed then the BMC functionality will be limited. The IP you give is for a non GUI interface with the BMC through IPMI-tools.

After that are you able to ping the IP address assigned?

Let me know what you see.

I figured that was the case (no iDRAC) was just hoping i'm wrong. I can
ping the interface configured for BMC but ssh is refused. so i'm not sure
how to access the BMC interface, all i found online so far online was
pointers to Web interfaces through iDRAC.

I really appreciate your help.

Can i load iDRAC (express) onto the server to get that functionality if we
need it???

Certainly,

You would need to contact your Sales Rep and ask them for part # 85VDW. that is the Express card thats needed.

I still would like to know how to connect through the BMC. I have been able
to ping the assigned IP.

You would use IPMI-tool to access it. It will be very limited, as I stated.

I"m not finding IPMI-tool ? can you give me a lin?

The only thing i need is to be able to boot the system remotely anything above that is icing on the cake.

The Upgrade to full iDRAC is part # 85VDW, but i don't have any expansion room.
