RAC0225: Sending the test mail failed with iDRAC 4.X.X.X

Hello,

we have a problem with sending emails from iDRAC 9 Enterprise starting from version 4.0.0.0. Sending emails was working fine up to version 3.36.36.36. After we upgraded to 4.0.0.0 we started receiving error:

RAC0225: Sending the test mail failed

We also tested 4.10.10.10 but got the same error.

Our setup is the following:

  • servers: PowerEdge R6415 & R7415
  • email server:
    • internal relay on private network
    • CentOS 6
    • postfix 2.6.6
  • iDRAC versions tested: 3.36.36.36, 4.0.0.0 and 4.10.10.10
  • network setup:
    • private network
    • static IP
    • DNS iDRAC name is already in the DNS so "Register iDRAC on DNS" is Disabled
    • Static DNS Domain Name is correct
    • two DNSes properly configured.

We already tried everything proposed in other topics with the same error but nothing helps.

On the mail server side we can see iDRAC connecting, but it simply disconnects without even trying to perform send:

So far the only solution we found is to downgrade iDRAC to 3.36.36.36.

Also, in the release notes of 4.0.0.0 we found the following:
- Customize Sender Address for iDRAC email alerts
- iDRAC email alerting to work with cloud-based email servers

and assumed that this change might have caused the problem when using internal SMTP relays.

Thanks in advance

Just got off the phone with Dell Support. It sounds like recent changes require encryption on the SMTP session else it fails. You can bypass that by using putty to SSH into your iDRAC and run the command:

racadm set idrac.RemoteHosts.ConnectionEncryption None

Immediately after doing this I was able to send a test alert.

I've got the same issue with brand new R540 with iDRAC 9, iDRAC Firmware Version 4.10.10.10. I configured it to use internal SMTP relay on IIS, and every attempt fails with RAC0225 error. In SMTP logs I can see that iDRAC is connecting, but then it put QUIT command instead send email. It must be software bug in iDRAC.

Thanks. Silver bullet. After searching all over the internet, and trying all of the offered solutions, this did it for me.

Anyone on Dell   R640 with firmware 4.0.0 should try this.
