OMSA 7.4.1 Compatibility

I went to install OMSA 7.4.1 (December 2014 release) today on some systems.  I immediately began to run into problems starting with these two:

PowerEdge 1950 (Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard)
PowerEdge 2900 (Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard (x64 Edition))

Both systems are currently running OMSA 7.4.0.  I ran from setup.exe and the pre-req checker passed both systems but upon continuing to the MSI portion of the installation I received this message on both:

"This is not a supported server.  Dell OpenManage Systems Management Software (64-Bit) software can only be installed on supported servers."

Again, both of these systems are currently running OMSA, pass the pre-req check, and both the hardware and operating systems appear on the compatibility list for this release.

Any thoughts?  Any idea on the best way to get support for this issue?

Hi,

Here is the link to the release notes : http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_software/esuprt_ent_sys_mgmt/esuprt_ent_sys_mgmt_opnmng_sw/dell-opnmang-sw-v7.4_Release%20Notes6_en-us.pdf.

In the "what's new" section of the release notes there is a list of supported servers on which you can install OM 7.4.1.

Hope this helps.

Thanks

Hi, this reply is a bit frustrating since it does not seem as if you looked into the issue at all.  Here is the entire contents of the "what's new" section which indicates what new platforms are supported, not a complete support matrix:

What’s New
• For systems running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 7 operating system:
o Support on all 12th generation of PowerEdge servers (Rx20, Mx20, Tx20).
o Support for the following 11th generation of PowerEdge servers – R415, R515, R610, R710, R715, R815, R910, M910, M915, and T110 II
• Support for Microsoft Windows installers on PowerEdge R220, R920 v1.1, and FM120.
• Support for:
o VMware vSphere (ESXi) 5.5 U2 on PowerEdge R920 v1.1.
o Microsoft Windows Server 2008 (32-bit) on PowerEdge R220.
• Support for the following PowerEdge servers: FM120 and R920 v1.1
For a complete list of supported operating systems and platforms, see the latest Systems Management - Software Support Matrix available at dell.com/openmanagemanuals.

By following the URL dell.com/openmanagemanuals I was able to find documentation for OMSA but none of the documents lists supported systems to officially back up what is listed on the download page.  There is one document titled "Systems Management Tools And Documentation 7.4.1 Supported Systems - Release Notes"  (ftp.dell.com/.../dell-opnmang-srvr-admin-v7.4_Release%20Notes7_en-us.pdf) that doesn't contain any useful information... only this circular reference:

Supported Systems for Version 7.4.1
• For information about the supported Systems, the operating systems supported by these systems, and the components that can be installed on these systems, see the Systems Software Support Matrix at dell.com/openmanagemanuals and browse to OpenManage Software 7.4
DVD

I can't find any document resembling a "Systems Software Support Matrix" and searching for this on the support website returns 0 results.

7.4.1 no longer supports Server 2003. you will also find you will not be able to run SUU on 2003 either (not the latest generated versions of SUU. You will have to either use OME to push the updates out or manually copy them over from the SUU repository folder and even then some of them will no long run on 2003. I speak from experience but I'm not a God on OME / OMSA or SUU (anybody care to correct any part of my comments above).

You need to start thinking about moving away from 2003 as MS will no longer be supporting the OS in 2003 hence Dell's move away from updating support for 2003.

I do a lot of monitoring with OME as well as firmware updates using SUU and OME and have come across my fair share of failed updating on 2003. I've even messed around with over writing the newer generated SUU file structure with a working version to no avail.

Dear addilapi,

I understand  the problem faced is that you require to install the latest version of OpenManage on 2950, 1950 servers. Allow me to briefly share my views herewith.

OpenManage 741 is a specific intermediate release for supporting RedHat 7 on all 12th generation of PowerEdge servers & 11th generation of PowerEdge servers – R415, R515, R610, R710, R715, R815, R910, M910, M915, and T110 II. This OpenManage741 release will not support / is not intended to be applied on the OpenManage installation on Windows 2008 R2 on your 9th Generation servers (1950, 2950)

I would suggest you to kindly continue to use OpenManage 740 or OpenManage 7402 (Exe Patch on top of already installed OpenManage 740) since you are having 9th Generation server at your end.

Thank you

Vivek.

From my understanding the R300 is NOT supported in this version hence the error message your were getting. I cannot see it listed in the 7.4.1 documentation http://downloads.dell.com/Manuals/all-products/esuprt_software/esuprt_ent_sys_mgmt/esuprt_ent_sys_mgmt_opnmng_sw/dell-opnmang-sw-v7.4_Release%20Notes6_en-us.pdf for this release version. Isn't the R300 a 10th generation server.. 7.4.1 supports 11th onwards.

I tried installing 7.4.1 on a PowerEdge R300 system running Windows Server 2008 x86.  Both are listed as supported on the download page and in Dell Support Matrix Version 7.4, yet I receive the same message about the system being unsupported.

7.4.1 is NOT the same as 7.4

7.4 is version release 7.4.0 and the latest patch to go with this release is 7.4.0.2 which you should be installing if you are using 7.4.0

It looks as though the minimum in the 300 range is the 320 model. This link takes you to the 7.4.1 documentation which has everything listed in there about what is and isn't support. http://topics-cdn.dell.com/pdf/dell-opnmang-sw-v7.4_Reference%20Guide7_en-us.pdf

It serves me right for not taking screenshots of things when I posted.  It looks like things have been changed since then.

It's still really *** that Dell is fragmenting OMSA like this.  There's now 3 versions to keep track of: 8.0.1, 7.4.1 and 7.4.0.2.  Making things harder for system admins does not encourage them to purchase your products.

I agree with the previous poster... the state of OMSA is very discouraging.  When I started this thread about 7.4.1 all of my hardware systems were listed as supported including the PE2900 and PE1950 I posted about.  Today the download page for 7.4.1 indicates the only supported system is the PER920.

The fragmentation is now causing additional management headaches for our automated deployment routines as each piece of physical hardware has to be identified during deployment and the correct versions of OMSA targeted both for initial install and later upgrades.  We standardized on Dell because of the simple, integrated toolsets that allowed us to not have to target individual hardware.  Now that this is no longer the case, perhaps Dell doesn't mind at all if we explore some other server vendors?  If I have to treat each Dell server like it is from a different vendor anyways then why not check out HP or Lenovo ... perhaps their tools are straightforward and high quality like Dell's once were.

It's not that hard to keep track of things really, let's be grateful we have this product. Imagine trying to manage so many servers without it!

Merry Christmas

We are happy that we have this product to assist with managing our servers, but we are unhappy with the new direction Dell is trying to take it.  One version for all servers adheres to the KISS principle.  Fragmenting it out into many versions needlessly complicates things.  Last I checked there was:

7.4.0.2: "Legacy" Servers

7.4.1: Selected 11th generation PowerEdge Servers and all Dell’s 12th generation Servers.

8.0.1.1: PowerEdge R730, PowerEdge R730 XD, PowerEdge R630, PowerEdge T630, Dell Precision R7910

8.0.2: PowerEdge R430, PowerEdge R530, PowerEdge T430, PowerEdge M630, PowerEdge FC630, PowerEdge C4130

When OMSA 8.0 first came out and it didn't support older servers, while it was not ideal, it was understandable if Dell wanted to drop support for older hardware with the new release.  But this thing of point releases messing with compatibility makes me wonder if a dispensary recently opened near Dell's HQ.

*Please* go back to one version of OMSA for all.

OMSA 8.1 was released in April 2015 and the list of Compatible Systems is much larger than we saw with 7.1 and 8.0.  So, it looks like Dell is headed in the right direction again.
