Dell Streak Froyo (2.2) Update Frequently Asked Questions

Hi Folks,
I created this FAQ to share updated information and answers to some of the more popular questions we've been getting. Feel free to post any additional questions and/or comments here regarding the Froyo update on the Dell Streak.

Thanks,
Amy

Q. What if I am not a current Streak owner, but I plan to buy from Best Buy or Dell directly in the U.S.? Will Froyo be pre-installed?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. For those AT&T customers who purchased a Streak from Best Buy prior to the Froyo update, here is a link to download the update if you don’t have it already: http://mobileupdate.dell.com/PackageProductionLocations/Streak_340_14844_31.pkg
Also, Streak with Froyo pre-installed is currently available on www.dell.com in the U.S.

Q. When will the Open Source code for Streak Froyo be available?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Source code is now available at http://opensource.dell.com/releases/streak/ .

Q. What if I buy my Streak in Japan, Korea or Singapore? Will it have Froyo preinstalled?
A. Yes, Streaks purchased in Japan, Korea or Singapore will have Froyo preinstalled.

Q. What if I installed a non-Dell version of Android on my Streak? Will I still get the update?
A. No.  The update will only be deployed to Streak units which have Dell-provided versions of Android.

Q. Where is the link to the Dell Mobile Sync software?
UPDATED 4-8-11
A. On the Dell Support Site, under Drivers and Downloads:

Q. What if I don’t want to use the Dell Stage Interface?
A. You can remove it by holding down your finger on the widget shortcut and choosing the delete option.

Q. Can I run the update, even if I don’t get the official notice, by copying the URL from someone else’s device?
A.  No, the final link to download the 2.2 Froyo update will be non-functional unless the browsing session is initiated via the software update mechanism on the Streak device. This is because the software update application in the device communicates with the OTA update server to authenticate the update session.   The link to the update is dynamically set to download the correct software package based on the device that is connecting to the update server. Please wait for the software update notice to display on the device itself, when your version of the software is ready for the upgrade.  You can continue to check for updates manually by going to Menu->Settings->About device->System Updates which will connect to the update server and correctly check for an update.

Q. Why is UK getting Froyo update before US?
A. Technically, that is not true. I'd like to clarify a rumor that got started Friday because of two tweets from UK customers. They had received an update message in error last Friday. I followed up with the team that deploys the updates and found out a small set of devices may have received a “Software Update is available” notice but when they selected it, they were directed to a webpage that indicated “No software updates available at this time.”  Shortly after I sent out the apology tweets to the two users, I got an update from the deployment team apologizing for the brief glitch. They also noted that the issue was fixed and no further devices would receive notices until the actual update was turned on. This OTA update is rolling out in phases to different groups of customers. Although I can’t share the exact scheduling, I can say that this week folks who were part of the US Beta testing group will be some of the first to receive the update. Then, folks in Europe with unlocked devices will start to receive the update.

Q. Why can't I have the EXACT date when my device will receive the Froyo update?
A. This has been a very controlled release and several factors affect the rollout. There are also many reasons for not sharing specific dates. For one thing, the rollout schedule changes periodically. This allows our deployment team to stop and fix issues they may discover. Other factors include logistics and coordination/approvals from third party providers. Appreciate your feedback and patience while we continue to roll the update out.

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, I received the OTA Froyo update, but I am getting the redirect error. When will Dell fix this?
UPDATED 12-14-10
A. Here is the latest Android 2.2 update for the unlocked phones that are currently on Dell version 3.09 or 3.15  that fixes the issue with browser redirect errors:

Q. I bought my Streak Unlocked, but have not received the update yet.
UPDATED 12-14-10
A.  Everyone (globally) who purchased an Unlocked version of the Streak should have received an update notice by now. If not, please manually check for your update by either 1. shutting down and rebooting or 2. going to Streak Settings – About Device and selecting System Updates.

I can't believe that Dell have (apparently) removed Outlook support from the Streak. That was one feature that I researcehd carefully before buying and would not have bought if it was not available.

Is there no chance of it coming back? I especially want calendar support as well as contacts, and also tasks are important (notes less so).

What are the recommended alternatives? I see there are many possible solutions - via google, using third party paid-for applications, etc. Do we all have to research individually and likely buy some duff applications and waste lots of time and possibly lose data along the way, or can Dell give us a recommendation which they have tested (surely) before deciding no longer to support Outlook.

Or do they not want to maintain a business market for the Streak?

If the Dell Android 2.2 update is this bad I suggest rooting the dang phone and install a custom Android 2.2 ROM. This way once 2.3 (Gingerbread) shows up you can install the updated customer ROM instead of waiting 6-8 months for Dell.  :emotion-15:

The Dell streak is picking up a good fan fair but this update debacal could very well kill that. Also those that have ATT U-verse and of course the app is not available for Android 1.6 it would be nice to know if it will be after the 2.2 update.:emotion-47::emotion-47:

The Streak is great so far everyone that see's mine loves it and asks a ton of questions. The ATT wireless store Rep. saw it and said "That is a phone" and of course I said "yes it is". It was fun he tried so hard to have his Samsung Captivate send me into an ohh ah spin. Once I wipped out the Streak and held it in front of the display "iPad" he did the ohh ah rant...LOL. Oh and I have close to 32 apps, and growing, installed and can almost get 2 days on a single charge.  I'll be picking up a 32GB micro SD card this x-mas to place in the Streak for the extra app storage.:emotion-2:

Two days on a single charge will be a tall order on 2.2. The battery life is no where near as good as 1.6.

To anyone that bought a sim free or any Dell Streak in the UK, DO NOT Download the 2.2 software, my Streak is now locked in a cycle of freezing up, or a perpetuall cycle of messages reading 'failure to load part of the Android core software', it's a complete disaster and a regresive step as a user interface, since visually its aimed the facebook/twitter user, not the business user. When loading the software it also wipes out all your contacts and most media files. After downloading the docking station and sync functions failed to work. I am now left with a completely useless machine unless I can finally get through to some some form of Cutomer [dont] Care services in the UK. Upgrade to 2.2 at your peril.

Hi Amy,

Does the Dell team know that the front camera stopped working for applications like fring and Tango during video calls? This used to work on 1.6 and 2.1 and now on 2.2/froyo it no longer works with either application, it only shows the back camera.

Amy,

Is there any update on the release for AT&T devices? How is the rollout going? What percentage of Streaks have been updated thus far.

I love my new streak, but Dell should really be trying to make sure that people want to keep them.

Hey Amy,

Since you are saying that the release is controlled as This allows our deployment team to stop and fix issues they may discover.  Considering the current 2.2 Official ROM(full of uncertainity and force closes) that many of us have in our respective streak's, how and when does dell plan to provide the bug fixes? Since, the official update has become a talk of the town because of the uncertainties, how does dell plan to provide the patchwork (the further updates supposed to fix the bugs)?

I don't use twitter, can someone please tweet the link below to http://www.twitter.com/stephenjatdell and ask stephenj what is happening to address these issues and when we can expect a fix.

Hello Amy, hello nutstoo,

over the weekend I made a reset to factory defaults with my 2.2 streak. Afterwards I can not determine any change concerning the Wifi behaviour (reception and stability was better with 1.6).

Is Dell working on patches? May there be sometimes in the near future any informations about?

Is a simple and safe downgrade possible from SD-card with the "update.pkg" function one can find in the "factory reset menu"?

Where at Dell can one find information and help, if this here is the wrong place?

Thanks and greetings, Ralf

Hi, Currently there has been a rumor of the AT&T (baseband -31) update that it has been pushed back until January. Does Dell have any comment or information on this? For everyone else please remember this is just a rumor.
