Venue 8 7840 - Charges but no data connection

My Venue 8 7840 runs fine and charges without a problem. When I try to connect it to a PC (I've tried 2 different ones running Windows 10), I get nothing. Well that's not true, it charges.

Windows doesn't recognize it as anything (not even an unrecognized device in device manager). I've tried different cables including known good data cables but I can't seem to see the tablet. I even tried connecting using ADB (after installing drivers etc) and it is not seen.

At this point, I'm fairly certain that it is a hardware issue but I'm travelling right now and would like to transfer some files so I thought I would post something here to see if there is anything I might be missing software wise. Seems odd that it just won't do data.
