Yes, the system disk area is similar to the VNX one.
There are a lot of differences, but the system drives are still mirrored across the 4 initial drives.

The internal structure of the system drives isn’t documented customer facing.
If you have more than one system drive failed then you work with customer service to recover.

when you create a pool, are these system drives included or selectable?

Unity has one internal SSD used as OS and vault drive.
System drives shown in green are contain array information and are located on drives 0 through 3 in the DPE.

*Before performing any actions like this Customer Service should be engaged as this may not be necessary.
To go further when you're in Unisphere for Unity... Service -> Service Tasks you can put the SP into "Service Mode" then execute the ReImage task.. "https://community.emc.com/Reimage a Storage Processor (SP) to safely fix problems with the system software that could not be resolved by rebooting the SP. Reimaging reinstalls the user's root operating system while leaving the user's data intact."
This information can be found by clicking "More Information" while having Reimage selected in unisphere or by going to online help using the ? at the top right of the Unisphere.

I got an alert saying system disk only have ten percent free space. This was during an upgrade on a brand new array with no luns configured
What does this mean

The first four drives of the DPE are known as system drives, and contain data used by the operating environment. While they can be used in Pools to hold user data, the entire formatted capacity of the system drives will not be available. These drives should not be moved within the DPE or relocated to another enclosure, and should be replaced immediately in the event of a fault. A system drive is not eligible to be used as a hot spare. For this reason, the minimum number of drives in a system is 5: system drives configured in a RAID 1/0 (1+1 or 2+2) configuration with a hot spare.
