Backup and/or report the VMAX Configuration for DR
Hi there,
is there a procedure, tool or script to backup the VMAX configuration - not the necessary the information from the BIN file.
Or can anyone make a recommendation how to report the configuration so a new VMAX can be configured exactly the same way in case a disaster strikes and destroy's a VMAX.
I know there is a tool called NSD for Symmetrix but this doesn't seem to be available for customer's.
any help, idea's are appreciated
rgds

Hi Tom,
All the details reside in the symapi database, we use this as an input to NSD which then kicks out reports in excel format among other things. Having a copy of this secured and a backup of the masking database would be all the info required to effect a rebuild of a given array assuming like for like hardware. Any specific details you want to report on?

Hi Chris,
thanks for the answer. So if I get this rights the only thing that needs to be saved is the symapi database.
I’ll will check the report if it would be sufficed for the customer.
Is the NSD available for end customer’s?
Thx and rgds

Hi Tom,
Yes, obviously contents change over time as the array configuration changes, so needs to be a regular backup. If you’re using SRDF the default behaviour will have details of both local and connected arrays in the symapidb so you’re possibly covered anyway to a certain extent. Also backup the aclx database “symaccess –sid xxx –file mybackup.txt backup”, just run as a scheduled job.
Pretty sure NSD is internal and partner only, even then as a partner there were hoops to jump through in terms of certification. In terms of reporting, you can get similar output by saving cli output in xml format then a bit of excel manipulation. There are guys on here who know the cli far better than I do that can point you in the right direction, it’s just a matter of understanding what you need.
Regards,
Chris

Is there specific information you are looking for, suck as storage groups, pool info, etc? Or are you just looking for a system profile like cache, drive count, etc?

The main goal is to have ALL necessary information to configure a new VMAX the same way as a destroyed VMAX (DR Scenario).
So we need the number of devices, size, meta member, Storage Group, Masking View, Initiator, Initiator Group, RDF Pairs and so on….
