Host Based Migration from VMAX3 to VMAX All flash Array 850F

Hello All,

Can anyone point to a document or the pre-requisite to be made when we are migrating from VMAX3 to VMAX All Flash Array for AIX host based VG mirror and also for VMware microsoft moves.

This will help a lot

Refer to the Host Connectivity Guides for the respective platforms for any specific configuration settings:

https://support.emc.com/docu5265_Host_Connectivity_Guide_for_VMWare_ESX_Server.pdf?language=en_US

https://support.emc.com/docu5126_Host_Connectivity_Guide_for_IBM_AIX.pdf?language=en_US

Refer to Dell EMC's E-lab Navagator for supported software revisions and topologies:

https://elabnavigator.emc.com

In general though, if you are supported and running properly on VMAX3, then you shouldn't have any issue with VMAX AF.

some notes for a smooth host based AIX migration:

If you are booting AIX servers from the VMAX 3, to prevent from running into any of many pitfalls, consider that the alternate disk installation would the preferred method to migrate a rootvg since it leaves a backup installation of AIX on the host; the alt disk install will provide the benefit to have a consistent ODM while doing the migration, too.

  • If PowerPath is used, review the “EMC PowerPath for AIX Installation and Administration Guide”, chapter “Cloning the boot device”;
  • Otherwise refer to the procedure “EMC Host Connectivity Guide for IBM AIX” > “Cloned installation using alt_disk_install”.

Remember that you cannot migrate SAN paging devices or SAN heart beat devices - in this case create new VMAX AF devices and delete the VMAX 3 devices (before disconnecting them)...

Hope this will help.

Best regards,

Swen
