newbe question, our first VMAX
Hello all,
I'm sorry if this is a trivial question; I tried searching through the VMAX 10K spec sheets, and though these forums without finding an answer. We are upgrading from Equallogics to a VMAX 10k, we're very excited.
I was wondering if RAID 50 was available on the VMAX 10K? According to the spec sheet RAID 5 is available. While I'm new to the EMC platform to me it would make sense that if you put several RAID 5 disk groups into a thin pool you would accomplish (about) the same effect?
Am I totally missing something here?
Thank you kindly,
Steven

Hi Steven,
The devices that you create that occupy the physicalspace on the disk (TDAT's in the case of thin provisioning) can be RAID1, RAID5 (3+1 or 7+1) or RAID6 (6+2 or 14+2). These are the only RAID types supported by the VMAX.
However, when it comes to thin provisioning, all the TDATs assigned to a pool are striped together. This is done at a layer above the physical disk RAID. So with RAID 5 TDEVS in a thin pool, it's a bit like RAID50.
