SRM Alerting/Orchestration/Automation Options

Looking for some field experience on this.  A customer is running SRM and using EMC storage.  They are looking for ways to automate the updating of their SRM environment (protection groups and recovery plans) when their production environment changes.  Events such as new VMs being created that need to be included in a recovery plan are one challenge, as are changes to existing protected VMs.  Some of the changes could include moving the VM to a different datastore via svMotion, or adding or moving an individual VMDK.  Obviously SRM can't be aware when a net new VM is created that needs to be protected, that has to be part of the organization's workflow but looking for ideas and field experience on the subject. 

How have folks linked their production environment changes that affect DR to their SRM configuration?
